Who Are You vs Who Do You Want To Be?
It's that time of year, that weird space between the hustle and bustle of Christmas and the new year. It can be tough for a lot of us. All of a sudden things are little more quiet and still than normal and its natural to reflect on the past year and think about what did and didn't happen.
As humans, we tend to lean into the negatives. We remember the bad stuff more easily and bring it up more readily. We often try to fight this, distracting ourselves from negative feelings and emotions with busy-ness, food, drink, anything, we do anything and everything but JUST SIT with our feelings. And, truly its not your fault. How often are we told to "focus on the positive"? Like every day, day in and day out, right? And while being positive isn't bad advice, its not good advice when you're trying to ignore things in your life that NEED to be addressed.
It's not a bad thing to reflect on things that didn't work out the way you wanted, to acknowledge that maybe you could have worked harder or smarter, to regret a few decisions, to realize that there are things in your life that need to changed in order for you to be successful and happy, to "sit in" your disappointment, your sadness, and even your anger. It's ok to feel bad sometimes and to face all of those emotions head on BUT, it's ONLY productive if you acknowledge the negatives and RESOLVE to do better in the future.
And that's what we'd encourage all of you to do with this time right now before 2022 begins.
Evaluate this past year. What went well? What didn't? What was your role in it? What was out of your control? What wasn't? Then ask yourself, HOW CAN I DO BETTER?
Ask yourself "Who was I this past year?". Describe yourself like you're writing our the character for a book. Do you like this gal/guy? If not, CHANGE THE STORY. How could you be a better leading character in your book? Write out a description of the person you want to be in 2022.
Grab your journal and use the "Ideal Self" page to do so. If you run out of room, grab some scrap paper and keep going.
We're doing this too so you're definitely not alone.
Sincerely,
Team Gym Gypsy
