In each seashell on any given beach is encoded every facet of a life: proteins and minerals are metabolized unconsciously by an otherwise floppy, vulnerable organism into a valiant attempt at armor, destined to be ground into fine grains of sand by even the most fastidious feet of a vacationer or townie. Tiny particles form complex sculptures destined to become tiny particles of a different variety, the oceanic equivalent of “ashes to ashes, dust to dust.”
