El Salvador!!!

This is the 1st stop on our family world tour. For those of you who guessed the location based off my clues on IG stories, kudos!

1) El Tunco, El Salvador is a charming little beach town known for incredible surf & the El Tunco rock (which the locals think looks like a 🐷)

2) We got to El Salvador just in time for my middle sister ’s bday!

3) This area is also often called ā€œBitcoin Beachā€ bc they take bitcoin EVERYWHERE! You can buy coffee or land with bitcoin!

4) We kind of feel like it’s our bday too bc rented us the nicest house…

5) With ocean front views & a pool!

6) & gorgeous interiors. Talk about a soft landing post LA fires.

7) & just when you think we may be bougie…nah! This is us en route to eat street pupusas post surf.

8) Trust when we say these are homemade!

9) My heart soars when I see my kids taking in the culture. Driggs doing the pupusa making moves.

10) Carpool El Salvadoran style! I was told this is how the high school soccer team travels for games.

11) El Tunco is also called ā€œSurf Cityā€. The waves are pretty magical. It’s no wonder hosts surf competitions here.

12) And…Surf injury #8788364!! Stepped on glass getting out of the water.

13) & bc El Salvador is fully trying to promote surf tourism…they offer clinic visits FREE for tourists.

14) Perk of being away from city life is…spotting wildlife around the neighborhood. šŸ¦Ž

15) Kids are enrolled in The Virtual Academy for 4 hours a day. Then it’s mama’s world school which includes surf classes!!

16) Lulu girl getting after it! She’s 6 & has surfed Hawaii, Costa Rica, & now, El Sunzal in El Salvador. What a lucky little peanut.

17) Driggs doing the ā€œswitch footā€ trick. He’s such a little grom.

18) My handmade decoration for ’s bday. Mr. Miyagi is the best one šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£

19) LOVE family board game nights. Though, the Chang competitive gene is a little disturbing šŸ˜

20) So many of you have bombarded me w questions re: our travel/LA departure. What countries r we going to? How long will we be away? How can we afford this in time & $$. I’ll talk about it all on the & YT channel soon

It’s not a good bye, LA.
It’s a ā€œsee you laterā€.

For those of you who asked why we are temporarily relocating…so many reasons but here are the main ones.

PROVIDE HOUSING:
Post LA fires, my husband & I felt completely helpless in how we can help. But then, the opportunity presented itself. Two families, who lost their homes 😭, reached out to us about staying at our house & our guest house. Lightbulb moment…the best way we can be helpful is to provide housing!

HEALTH CONCERNS:
Add to that, all my underlying health issues (Brain tumor history & other auto immune issues) the post fire air quality was definitely taking its toll. (TMI…I threw up so violently, I ripped my abdominal wall! I thought the bulge visible on stomach was a hernia at 1st but the doctor said it was the aforementioned🫣). Maybe it was norovirus…or maybe it was 12,000+ buildings burning down all at once.

NO SCHOOL:
My kids are already remote learning. Our beloved school sits at the foot of the Palisades. It’s been in the New York Times twice for whether or not it should be open given its proximity to the fires. With our son’s history of asthma, we decided to play it safe. So…Mama’s World School it is!

Leif & I are lucky in that we can work remotely (most of the time). So with all the reasons mentioned & my NEED to be in the ocean…we are now on the road. Where? The world. Seriously.

I’ll share much more on my soon-to-launch podcast (). How we picked the locations. The highs & lows of nomadic life. The pros & cons of ā€œMama’s world schoolā€. Etc etc.

As many of you know, my move from NYC to LA 14 years ago SAVED ME. The discovery & recovery of/from my brain tumor…I owe to the city of ANGELS. So, trust when I say this ain’t a good bye….but, rather, a see you later.

California saved me & it will forever be our home.

Tks for the fun pics šŸ’•

One of the most common questions I get from content clients: how do I grow on _______ (social media platform)?

Authenticity.

Everyone can tell who’s a REAL person & what’s a REAL moment.

Like when your toddler streaks onto the set while you’re trying to deliver the news!! That’s an authentic moment. (Excuse my mermaid outfit! That was our Halloween show)

But the real benefit of being authentic online…isn’t social media growth…it’s your ability to shed the armor/facade…and to travel lighter.

To be free. To be you.

But like can we also talk about the 3rd slide?! Baby Driggs realizing it’s HIM on camera: ā€œMe!ā€ šŸ™†šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ’•

p.s. I still use filters & I still often wear makeup when I film content…so, I, too, am working on being more authentic! The work never stop!

Just some thoughts deep in my head….

1) LA officials announced TODAY (2/2/2025) that the Palisades/Eaton fires are 100% contained. That’s 25 days after this video of my plane landing at LAX was filmed. It took the fires 25 days to be fully contained!! This video now has 10 million views on my IG. &, sigh šŸ˜”, 1000s of hurtful/hateful messages from folks who are conflating this tragedy with politics & what’s happening in the Middle East šŸ˜”

2) šŸŽ¶ just keep on swimming…keep on swimmingā€¦šŸŽ¶šŸŸ

3) I once attended a powerful water prayer service in Indonesia. My soul could really use that right about now. My prayer from then still stands….may we feel healthy, safe, loved…and may we offer the same for our planet.

4) when all fails, find a way to laugh. Wait for it…ouch.

5) I love making movies in LA but like…nothing films here anymore. So the big questions in my head: what am I even doing in LA? I can’t go in the ocean. I can’t breathe the air outside. I’m not filming. THE KIDS AREN’T IN SCHOOL…

6) THANK YOU to all those doing the most dangerous jobs including this worker who’s attempting to divert toxic fire waste from going into our water system & the ocean. But like…

7) with my health history (10+ surgeries I including 2 brain surgeries) all I can think is chromium 6. IYKYK

8) THIS was inside my head. Some joke that I’ve had 9 lives. Again..would I be pushing my luck with my health if I stay in LA…sigh…

9) We’ve got some big decisions to make. But,
as long as I have my ride or die…we will rise to the occasion.

10) Life is hard. But we can choose our hard.

1) Me. Just utterly confused on how to show up to this space. So grateful to be alive/have a home, & yet, so guilty. Why am I the lucky one?! šŸ˜šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

2) the view of the fires from my street on Jan 7th evening (the Palisades fire started that morning). This was shot by my neighbor.

3) me driving to the grocery store/Armageddon on Jan 8th

4) šŸ’Ø šŸ’ØšŸ’ØšŸ’ØšŸ’Ø

5) still making content for brands (as if the world isn’t burning down!). Sigh. Bc a girl still has to pay the bills.

6) At Driggs’ soccer game wondering if this game is really worth him breathing this air

7) his little victory celebration after scoring a penalty kick šŸ’• (this was Jan 19th so improved air quality but def still concerning). Sigh. šŸ˜” how do I balance his mental health and physical health in this fire crisis?! I can’t keep him cooped up indoors worrying all day but like….whats in this air?! šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ˜«

8) we are on week 2 of zoom school & while I can’t wait for school to reopen…I CAN…

9) bc this is what the school grounds looks like. With every step…big puff of ash 😩🫣😮.

10) my friend lives across the street from the school. This is her INDOOR plant. Ash and other fine toxic dust …EVERYWHERE. Every nook & cranny. There’s just no way our school will ever be free of this stuff. So happy our school is still standing but so scared to ever re-enter….

Gratitude, guilt, fear, working and attending soccer games like it’s normal times…I’m just a ball of mixed emotions. Like I said, I just don’t know how to show up to this space anymore. Anyone else?
