30 days of building Mori in public.

Here is what we actually learned.

One. Our first approach to the upper did not work.
We are rethinking the whole thing.

Two. The sole took way longer than expected.
But we are close. And we know exactly why it took so long.

Three. We made it to Hult Prize nationals.
We did not see that coming either.

Four. We realised we need real testing before anything launches.
That happens over summer. That is the right call.

Month 2 starts next week.

We are just getting started.

The materials in conventional shoes cannot be recycled or separated. They just sit there. Kids outgrow shoes every few months. The waste just compounds.

When we started building Mori, we looked into what happens to kids shoes when they are outgrown.

We kind of wish we hadn’t.

16 pairs before age 7. Every single one in landfill.
The materials cannot be recycled. The waste just compounds.

So we built a system where the shoes come back.

We hit a wall this week.

Our approach to the textile upper did not go the way we thought.

Back to the drawing board.

But this is what building something new actually looks like.
You try. It does not work. You learn. You find a better way.

Now we have three directions: textile, knitted TPU, or fully 3D printed TPU.

A podiatrist we work with gave us a test for any kids’ shoe.

Toe down. Three fingers on the heel. Push.

If it bends without resistance, it’s designed to support a developing foot. If it doesn’t, it’s working against it.

We gave the whole team a conventional shoe and let them try it.

Building the shoe is not the hardest part.

The hardest part is this:

Getting someone to trust a brand they’ve never heard of enough to send the shoes back.

We think about this every day.

We’re not pretending the ask is small. It isn’t.
But we’re building every part of the process around removing every reason not to.
