The Man & The Manifesto

Mark Raisler has been guiding the Missouri River near Craig, Montana for more than 25 years. He can tell you why March browns only come off on certain banks, identify which insect a fish is eating by the way it rises, and predict whether a trout is a brown or a rainbow simply by where it’s sitting.

A few years ago, Mark made a decision: no more nymphing. If you want to fish with Mark Raisler, you’re fishing dry flies.

He’s never been happier.

Head over the the Skwala YT for more on this pivotal decision. Prefer the longer read? In the Skwala Lounge, Mark explains why he made the switch, what it means for his clients, what it means for the river, and why he thinks more guides should draw` their own lines.

You’ve heard it a thousand times: presentation matters more than pattern. It’s true. But pattern still matters, and sometimes the right fly makes the difference between a great day and a beautiful float.

Charlie Craven has been spinning bugs for nearly 50 years—as an angler, a guide, a commercial tyer, and a fly designer. We asked him to help us think through one of fly fishing’s most persistent arguments: When do complicated flies make practical sense, and how much is too much in fly design?

“Miles went full shepherd staff with his brand new rod. The tip exploded just as he grabbed his very first steelhead by the tail. ‘I didn’t care. I just threw the broken rod up on the grass. I was shaking. I couldn’t believe I caught a steelhead. It was insane.’”

Miles Marquez generally doesn’t shy away from hard things. He grew up in New York City, rode skateboards semi-professionally, taught himself to cast fly rods for stripers off wind-battered jetties, became a U.S. Army Ranger, served two deployments in Afghanistan, and then started his career as a fly fishing guide on some of the most competitive trout water in the West. But he refused to pick up a Spey rod.

Then, his girlfriend moved to the Pacific Northwest, and Miles spent last winter learning to be a terrible fly caster again.

Nothing knocks the dust off quite like the Skwala Hatch.

After months of winter – full of bobbers, sink tips and spey flies – these big bugs found in March and April are the unofficial stamp of spring here in the northern Rockies. The flagbearers for the dry fly fishing ahead and the welcome committee for many great days to come.

What hatch do you look forward to the most in the spring?

Today, we turn four years old.

Four years isn’t long in fly fishing.

Four years in, your cast still probably needs a lot of work. You can spend four years on a fishery and still barely know it. Guides are still green after four years, still proving themselves—so are fishing gear companies. The river doesn’t care how old our brand is, and neither do you.

When Skwala launched, the goal wasn’t to make noise. It was to make the kind of fishing gear we wished we could find—gear that could hold up to weather, wear, and scrutiny, that earns its place in your truck, your boat, and your closet.

That standard hasn’t changed.

Over the last four years, we’ve slowly added new designs that we think live up to our standards. New outerwear, insulation, sun protection, waders, footwear, and now gloves. Our design process is simple, but demanding: start with performance, refine relentlessly, and don’t release it until it’s ready.

We’ve learned a lot in four years.

We’ve learned that anglers notice details — even the ones they can’t quite articulate.
We’ve learned that retailers value brands that show up and listen.
We’ve learned that performance builds loyalty faster than volume ever could.

Most of all, we’ve learned fly fishing rewards patience, even when it comes to brands.

We’re proud of what’s been built so far. But Skwala was never meant to be a flash in the pan. We’re here for the long run.

There’s more coming.

New categories. Deeper refinement. Bigger commitments.

Four years in, the foundation is solid.

And we’re just starting to warm up.
