Today’s confusing for beginners moment: Joker swaps.

Say there’s an exposed Joker standing in for a 2 bam, and someone discards the actual 2 bam. Can you call it to swap out the Joker? No, you can’t. A discard can only be called to complete your own hand, not to swap a Joker.

Save this one, it trips up a lot of new players 🀄

Today’s confusing for beginners moment: discarding a Joker.

You’d think no one would ever do this, but it happens. Jokers can’t be used in a single pair or a run, so sometimes you genuinely have no other move. When a Joker gets discarded, it’s dead. No one can call it.

Most beginner mistakes happen in the half second before a tile leaves your hand.

Check the exposures. Know which tiles can’t be called. And remember a discarded Joker is gone for good.

Today’s confusing for beginners moment: hands that need zeros.

Except there’s no tile with a zero on it. So what do you do? You use Soap, the White Dragon, as your zero. It’s a substitution, and yes, it trips up a lot of new players.

You’ve finished the Charleston. 13 tiles in hand. Now what?

Start with the process of elimination. Skip singles and pairs if you’re newer to the game. Then look at what you’re holding: lots of winds, lots of dragons, mostly odd numbers, mostly even?

Here’s a rule of thumb: if 7 of your tiles fit a hand, that’s usually your direction. And if your numbers are a mix of odds and 6s, the 3, 6, 9 hands are your best friend.

Eliminate first, then narrow in. That’s the whole game 🩵
