Behind the Photo: a story about my image “Shootaround” taken October 2022 in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, NY.

It’s a fun one because I instigated the kids a little bit and one of them got so charged up, he started playing defense like the NBA was around the corner! No games played, no slacking at all. I also really love it because they keeping the recipes alive — outside all day, playing ball with the homies, a little smack talk, and a lot of fun. More of this!

Behind the Photos: let’s talk about the backstory behind my award-winning photo “Shoe Shine”. I made this photo October 2024 in Mexico City, while using a 1976 manual film camera.

In the back of my ride, I noticed this gentleman getting his shoes shine and man; it just looked like the perfect shot. He was looking down as I framed the shot, and because the car was turning, I had a split second to make sure my settings were on point. Once verifying, I snapped the shutter but RIGHT as I snapped, he looked up. He gave me the perfect gaze, right in the center of the lens. It was meant to be.

Behind the Photo: today’s breakdown is about my gallery featured photograph “Brooklyn Summers”, taken August 2023 right here in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn.

I saw the image in my mind before I shot it, with the fire hydrant being the centerpiece of the photo.. but I knew it wasn’t complete. There was a kid racing behind me back and forth on his scooter. His mom wanted him to stop so he wouldn’t interrupt my photo, but little did she know, that’s what I NEEDED for the photo. Once I told the kid to come by, he went 100mph and I snapped the photo with perfect timing. Divine timing rather.

11 x 14 on heavyweight, velvet matte paper. Outstanding quality and each print is only an edition of 5, never to be printed again. All photos personally taken by me on 35mm film w/ my 1976 Pentax k1000.

I started taking more walks recently, trying to clear my head and my mental — especially before and after a therapy session. Usually I grab a coffee, take random photos of what catches my eye and just watching. I just hate when it’s super windy out. Why do we need wind? Easily top 3 worst weather features in the universe lol.
