Piedmont Fibershed

Piedmont Fibershed The Piedmont Fibershed encompasses the area roughly within a 200 mile radius of Durham, North Carolina. What is a Fibershed? What about our clothes?

Piedmont Fibershed is a community organization dedicated to building a regional fiber system in the Piedmont of North Carolina centered around local fibers, local dyes, and local labor. We seek to support and develop a regional fiber economy that benefits the environment, workers, and the local economy. A fibershed is a natural textile resource base that uses the region as its guiding force in sou

rcing and making available fiber, textile, and dye products. We’re so invested in locally sourcing our food.

Introducing today’s directory feature: Sayde Laine Anderson !

Sayde Laine Anderson is a farmer, fiber artist, and natural dyer working across disciplines to explore environmental and social issues through traditional craft and plant-based color.

Working out of Saxapahaw, North Carolina, her practice sits at the intersection of soil and studio—foraging native botanicals and cultivating dye plants like Japanese indigo to create seasonal, place-based textiles.

Through hand-dyed fiber pieces, public art, and hands-on workshops, Sayde teaches regional natural dyeing and slow, cyclical craft, encouraging a deeper connection to the land and offering sustainable alternatives to synthetic textiles.

Are you a fiber or textile business in North Carolina? We’d love to include you too! Just ifll out the form on our website (on the Directory page) to join our growing network and an opportunity to be featured.

Join us Wednesday, September 16th to learn about Emily Burghart’s exciting research into sustainable ways to establish mills that serve small-scale wool producers in North Carolina.

What will it take to create sustainable mill infrastructure in North Carolina that supports small wool producers? Last year, Emily partnered with us to research this question for her master’s thesis at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment.

In this online presentation and Q&A, Emily will share findings that offer important insights and practical suggestions for our regional fiber community, including:
🐑the best locations for a wool pellet mill and a fiber processing mill
🐑opportunities and barriers to running cooperatived managed mill infrastructure
🐑approaches NC farmers are using to reduce parasite prevalence and maintain soil quality
🐑community approaches to reaching consumers throughout the state

This contest centers key elements that we support here at Piedmont Fibershed:

How beautiful are these bath sheets?

These were a new experiment from Kelly W at Piedmont Fiber Lab in Burlington.

Absorbent, soft, quick drying, and lovely on the eyes. Which explains why they’ve sold out already.

Kelly is keen to hear your thoughts about luxury bath linens, so feel free to let them know!
