There was so much we didn't know about car seats when we first brought our nugget home. Huge thanks to a La Leche group leader who gave me helpful tips. Here are a couple more for those joining the new parent club.

First the hard facts:

Road injuries are the leading cause of preventable deaths and injuries to children in the United States.

Correctly used child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent.

More than half of car seats are not used or installed correctly.

Here's how you can insure baby's safety:

1. Buy the right car seat for your baby's age and size.

2. Have your car seat professional installed (Some municipalities offer free installation at the fire department)

3. Properly fit baby in the car seat. Whether that is rear facing or forward facing. Ensure that their harness is properly fit and positioned.

4. Upgrade the car seat on schedule.

5. Yes, car seats expire. Check with the manufacturer for instructions on locating the expiration date.

Readying to bring your bundle of joy home can be an overwhelming experience. Like most parents, you intend to make their transition from womb to home as comfy as possible.

Here are the top items you’ll need when bringing baby home

1. Approved infant car seat (READ the Reviews!)
2. Safe place to sleep (Crib, Co-sleeper, etc…Your choice. Just make sure it’s safe)
3. Swaddles (Keep them snug)
4. Clothes in various sizes (My 9 lb nugget fit SNUG in newborn clothes)
5. Bathing supplies (Huddy was a little over a month before his first full bath)
6. Medical supplies (Diaper Cream, Thermometer, Nail Clippers, etc)
