A lot of us love learning (I know I do 🤓). We love a good sermon, a good Bible study, a good podcast, and a good theological rabbit trail. There’s nothing wrong with any of that. I spend plenty of time doing those things myself.

But James 4 has a way of making you stop and ask a different question.

What are we doing with what we already know? 😮‍💨

Most believers already know they should forgive. Most already know they should trust God. Most already know they should spend time in the Word, pray, repent, and obey when God speaks.

The challenge usually isn’t figuring out WHAT God wants. The challenge is SURRENDERING when what God wants collides with what we want.

That’s why James says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Pride isn’t always loud. Sometimes it looks surprisingly respectable. It can show up in a heart that keeps asking God for more direction while ignoring the direction He’s already given. Or it can show up in a heart that loves learning about Scripture but resists being changed by Scripture. 😅

James isn’t trying to shame us here. That’s not the Lord’s nature. He’s inviting us into something better. God’s grace is available to those who come before Him with open hands and a teachable heart.

So before scrolling away, take a minute and ask yourself:

➡️ What truth have I been hearing over and over lately?

➡️ What area of my life keeps getting convicted when I read God’s Word?

➡️ What step of obedience have I been postponing?

If this encouraged and/or challenged you, you need to join Hidden First! Every weekday, I send a free Bible study email that helps you understand Scripture in context and practically apply it to everyday life.

Maybe someone needs this reminder today ⬇️

If God told you to do something and you stopped because of fear, insecurity, discouragement, comparison, criticism, or simply because life got hard, DO NOT spend another day carrying guilt over it.

Repentance and obedience are still available. ‼️

Sometimes we spend so much time looking back at where we got off track that we never move forward. We replay the missed opportunities and delays when we knew what God was asking of us but chose not to move.

Repentance is turning around and responding to God with a fresh YES.🙌🏽

My mind goes to Jonah and Peter. I think about Mark, who walked away from a missionary journey and was later described as useful for ministry. Scripture is filllllled with people who struggled, doubted, hesitated, and found themselves off course. Again and again, we see God meet them with mercy and continue His work in their lives.

Maybe there’s something the Lord has been bringing back to your mind lately. It could be a ministry, dream, assignment, or a step of obedience you’ve been avoiding. 👀

What if it keeps coming back because God isn’t finished with it?

If He’s still nudging your heart, today is the day to stop replaying old failures and start taking the next step in front of you.

God is fully capable of redeeming the time you think you’ve lost. 🔥

Your story doesn’t have to end where fear convinced you to stop. It can continue with a simple, surrendered, “Yes, Lord.”

James 3 is really one of those chapters that will have you sitting there like “thank you Lord for your Word” 😭

Because wheww 😮‍💨 James says there’s a kind of wisdom that is earthly, unspiritual, and rooted in envy and selfish ambition. That means not every strong opinion, emotional reaction, or confident voice is actually wisdom from God.

Some people are operating from pride while calling it discernment. Some people leave division everywhere they go while convincing themselves they’re just “being honest.” Meanwhile wisdom from above carries itself VERY differently. It’s pure, peace-loving, gentle, full of mercy, and sincere.

Spiritual maturity shows up in everyday conversations way more than we think and James gets straight to the root. 👀

We’re currently studying through James in Hidden First, our weekday Bible study devotional email series 🤍 If you want deeper, practical Bible teaching that helps you actually understand and apply Scripture consistently, comment HIDDEN and I’ll send you the link!

It’s honestly kind of scary when you really sit with what James 3:5 is saying. 😟

A whole forest can be set on fire by something tiny. That means some of the biggest damage in our lives can begin with WORDS we barely even think twice about saying.

A bitter conversation can linger in someone’s heart for years, and a moment of anger can completely shift the atmosphere of a home. Sometimes sarcasm slowly hardens the way we speak to people we love, and gossip spreads faster than we realize before eventually creating division everywhere it touches. 😬

And the thing that gets me is how easy it is to justify it all because “that’s just how I talk” or “I was just being honest.”

Scripture is showing us that our mouth has the power to spread life or destruction far beyond the moment the words leave us.

Some of us can quote Scripture, lead Bible studies, post encouragement online, and still struggle to surrender our speech to the Lord. James spends so much time talking about the tongue because spiritual maturity shows up in everyday conversations, not just public ministry moments.

The way we speak to our family and friends matters and the way we speak when we’re frustrated, offended, tired, or angry matters too. Our words reveal what’s happening in our hearts.

Wheww, that should humble ALL of us a little. 😮‍💨

We love the idea of faith until God starts asking us to trust Him with the things we’ve been holding tightly 😅

James 2:21-26 has been sitting heavy on me because James shows us that faith was always meant to move beyond words. Abraham trusted God enough to surrender something precious to him. Rahab trusted God enough to risk her reputation and security. Their obedience revealed what they truly believed.

I think a lot of us are wrestling with this in real life RIGHT NOW.

Maybe God has been calling you to step out in obedience, but comfort feels easier. Maybe control feels safer. Maybe your plans make more sense to you than what God is asking. Maybe pride, reputation, or security has quietly become harder to release than we want to admit.

Real faith involves surrender because following Jesus changes the way we live, make decisions, and trust God even when we don’t see the full picture yet.

So let me ask you 👀 Which “bill” is hardest for you to hand over right now?

Anybody else feeling the weight of this lately? 🥺

If I’m being real, there are moments where what God is calling me to do feels bigger than me, my capacity, my comfort zone, and honestly y’all… bigger than my resources too. 😮‍💨

But I’ve been meditating on how throughout Scripture, God constantly called people into things they could not accomplish in their own strength.

For example 👇🏾

Moses felt inadequate.
Gideon felt weak.
Jeremiah felt unqualified.
The disciples were ordinary people.
Paul talked openly about weakness.

THEY WERE JUST LIKE US. 🤯

God has never been limited to using the naturally “most capable” person in the room. He looks for surrender, obedience, and dependence.

I think sometimes we assume feeling overwhelmed means we missed God somewhere, when in reality, it may actually be evidence that we’re being forced to rely on Him instead of ourselves.

Because if we could do it all comfortably in our own strength, we would be tempted to take the credit for it too. 😅

“Not by strength or by might, but by my Spirit,” says the Lord of Armies. - Zechariah 4:6 CSB

If you’ve been feeling stretched lately, this is your reminder that God’s calling on your life was never meant to push you toward self-sufficiency, but to pull you closer to JESUS. 🤍

What does James 1:22 actually mean when it warns us about “deceiving yourselves”? 👀

“But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (CSB)

WHEW. James does not tiptoe around anything. 😭

This verse is honestly such a needed reality check because it’s possible to hear truth constantly and still avoid obedience.

We can:
- listen to sermons and podcasts every week
- save Christian posts
- highlight our Bibles
- talk about theology
- feel emotional during church
- consume Christian content all day long

…and still stay stuck in the same patterns because hearing the Word is not the same thing as surrendering to it. 🫣 That’s the deception James is talking about.

Sometimes we think growth is happening just because we’re surrounded by truth, but biblical maturity is revealed in OBEDIENCE. It shows up in the way we speak, repent, forgive, serve, love people, fight sin, and respond when God convicts us.

I think this hits even harder in today’s culture because we have access to ENDLESS Christian content. You can listen to podcasts, watch sermons, scroll Christian TikTok, read devotionals, and still resist the very thing God is asking you to obey.

The goal is becoming more like Christ through obedience, not just hearing more truth.

What does James 1:17 actually mean when it says every good and perfect gift is from above? 👀

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”
James 1:17 (CSB)

James is reminding us that God is not the source of evil, confusion, or destruction. He’s the source of what is GOOD. 🙌🏾

Every good thing in our lives ultimately traces back to Him: wisdom, grace, salvation, provision, peace, growth, and even the strength to endure hard seasons.

I loveee that James calls Him the “Father of lights” and then reminds us that there is “no variation or shadow due to change” in Him. Everything around us changes constantly, but God’s character remains steady through all of it. 🥹

Sometimes His greatest gifts don’t always come wrapped in comfort. Sometimes they look like wisdom, conviction, waiting, pruning, and spiritual growth because His goal is to form CHRIST in us.

He’s a good good Father who gives good good gifts. 🤍

I think one of the hardest parts about following God is that He usually doesn’t hand us the entire plan upfront.

A lot of us want clarity soo badly because clarity feels safer. If we knew exactly how things were going to turn out, we’d feel more secure stepping out in obedience. But walking with Jesus requires trust, and trust is usually built in the places where you cannot see everything clearly yet. 😬

Tbh, that tension can be uncomfortable. You know God is leading you somewhere, but you still have questions and feel nervous. You still wonder how everything is going to come together. I think that’s where a lot of believers wrestle. We love the idea of faith until faith requires DEPENDENCE.

James 1:5-8 really challenged me because it reminded me that God is generous with wisdom. He’s not trying to confuse His children or keep us in the dark. At the same time, wisdom doesn’t always mean getting every detail we want. Sometimes wisdom looks like recognizing that God is trustworthy enough to obey even before you know how the story ends. 🙏🏽

Right now, we’re walking through the book of James together inside Hidden First, which is our weekday Bible study email series where I send out deeper Scripture breakdowns and practical teaching every morning 🤍

James gets straight to the heart of what genuine faith looks like when life gets hard. 😮‍💨 Thank God Scripture doesn’t tell believers to pretend pain feels good or act like difficult seasons do not affect them emotionally. It’s teaching us how to view trials through the lens of what God can produce through us.

Pressure has a way of revealing what is actually in us. 👀 Fear, anxiety, impatience, self-reliance, instability, and control often rise to the surface in hard seasons. That can be uncomfortable to confront, but God does deep work in people through seasons they would never willingly choose for themselves.

When James says “consider it joy,” he’s talking about PERSPECTIVE. He’s reminding believers that God is still forming endurance, maturity, and deeper dependence on Him even before circumstances change.

We’re spending this whole week walking through James 1 together inside Hidden First, our devotional email list. We’re actually studying the passage, breaking it down, and learning how to apply it to real life.
