Ultra training is all fun and games and shiny shoes until you realize half the cart is anti-chafe, rash cream, bloodwork, and something to roll on your legs when you can’t feel them anymore. 🥶

This part of training doesn’t look very cool while I sit on my bed next to a tub of Vaseline.

But this matters as much as any new shoes, or watch, or headphones.

The miles are for the reels and this post is for all my chafers out there.

Forget perfect, chase better.

Not sponsored, but shoutout to for being part of the ultra prep chaos.

Peak week for the backyard ultra.

12 days out from May 30th Backyard ultra with , and this whole thing has been shifting how I think about running.

Most people treat the marathon like the gateway. Train for 26.2, make it, then maybe start looking at ultras later.

But honestly, the backyard format might be one of the best ways to get into bigger mileage.

Slow place. No official distance. Basically tailgating with your crew of friends. And eating all the food you want 🍩

It turns running into something a little more playful and a lot more strategic than just running from A to B as fast as you can!

You can go for 3 loops, 5 loops, 10 loops, 24 hours, whatever sounds dumb enough to make you curious.

That’s what I’ve loved about this so far. It makes big mileage feel less like some elite, unreachable thing and more like a weird little game you can build toward.

Peak week was the final big confidence push.

The biggest lesson so far is that backyard ultras aren’t only about being able to run far.

It’s about repeating the same decision every hour.

That’s the part I’m trying to get better at.

Peak week now turns into taper, which honestly might be harder for my brain than the running.

12 days out.

I have somehow entered the backyard ultra rabbit hole.

It’s a simple race. You run 4.167 miles every hour until you can’t and last man standing wins.

It caught my attention because I realized this is less of a running race and more of a “how many tiny problems can you solve before they become big problems” race.

Like yes, obviously you have to run.

But also.

What am I eating every hour?

How much sodium do I need if it’s hot?

Am I drinking because I’m thirsty or because I’m panicking?

Do I sit down between loops or keep standing like an idiot because I feel rushed?

What socks am I wearing?

What happens when sweet stuff sounds disgusting?

What happens when my legs are fine but my brain starts bargaining?

What happens when I feel good early and my ego starts whispering dumb ideas?

That’s the part I didn’t fully understand at first.

This week we’re doing a 6 to 8 hour simulation to test the whole system before race day. To expose what I haven’t thought through yet.

I’m trying to treat this less like a “tough ultra” thing and more like a systems test. And I love systems and figuring out puzzles like this.

Because the race is May 30 and I’d rather find the problems now than meet them for the first time when my legs are cooked and I’m 7 hours deep.

Anyway.

This is the current chapter.

Every marathoner needs a pit crew shirt 👕

One thing i’m really glad we did for the cdmx marathon was design shirts for the pit crew (my family and friends).

Running a marathon is technically a solo effort… but the energy around you matters more than people think. Seeing familiar faces, hearing your name, knowing your people are somewhere out there on the course changes the whole vibe.

The shirts made it easy to spot each other in the chaos and it turned the whole thing into more of a team effort.

if you’re running a race with friends or family coming to support, I highly recommend doing something like this. Build your own little crew identity. It makes the day feel bigger than just the miles.

Sometimes the hardest climb is just convincing yourself to keep moving.

The mountain’s not the problem, we are.
But that means we’re also the solution. Keep going , keep chasin.

Even when the end is near, finish strong and then some. You’ll thank yourself later.
