In Japan, there's a "Crayon Shin-chan" train station — literally. The city of Kasukabe in Saitama Prefecture (where the anime is set) renamed a local train station to "Kasukabe Station" after the show's popularity, but the fun part is that they also installed life-sized bronze statues of Shin-chan and his family in the station plaza. The strangest fact? The statues are dressed in seasonal outfits — winter scarves, summer hats — changed by station staff every few months. And when the train departs, a recording of Shin-chan's voice (original actor, not the replacement) plays: "Unari ikimasu!" ("I'm off!") — a phrase he says every morning in the anime. So thousands of commuters hear a 5-year-old boy announcing their train departure daily!

Synopsis:
Tucked in the mountains near the elite Kunugigaoka Middle School lies a small derelict building that houses the delinquents and dropouts of Class 3-E. Looked down upon by their peers, the students in this class appear to have little hope in advancing their academic careers. That is, until the national government tasks them with eliminating the greatest threat to their planet: their new teacher.

Having already destroyed the moon, the octopus-like professor—dubbed "Koro-sensei"—has now threatened to destroy the Earth by March of the following year. In light of their mission, the students have found that killing him is easier said than done. Not only can Koro-sensei move at speeds of up to Mach 20, but he can also resist almost every earthly weapon. Ironically, he also proves to be one of the best teachers Class 3-E has ever had. Training the class to excel in both their studies as students and skills as assassins, Koro-sensei is confident that his students' ingenuity and indomitable will could return them to the main campus.

Through trial and error, Nagisa Shiota, as well as the other students of Class 3-E, must figure out Koro-sensei's weaknesses—and fast, for the very fate of the world depends upon it.

In Japan, the city of Hita in Ōita Prefecture (hometown of Attack on Titan creator Hajime Isayama) offers official marriage registration forms decorated with characters from the series — including Eren, Mikasa, and Armin. Couples can request these special forms at the city hall, and they are legally binding. The fun fact? One of the designs shows Eren in his Titan form roaring in the background, with the caption: "This love is a promise — even against the Titans." So yes, you can legally declare your marriage while being roared at by a fictional giant human-eating creature.

In Japan, there is a ninja museum in Iga (the birthplace of ninjutsu), but the anime connection is wild: the museum's tour guides are actually trained in kunoichi (female ninja) skills — including the ancient art of "ukemi" (safe falling). They perform a live demonstration where they flip, roll, and disappear through hidden doors. The fun fact? The museum hired a famous anime fight choreographer from the Naruto series to design their stage combat routine for visitors. So the ninjas you see leaping around on stage are using moves inspired by an anime that was itself inspired by real ninjas — a perfect loop! Also, the gift shop sells "ninja star" potato chips shaped like shurikens.

In Japan, there is a manhole cover museum — sort of. More than 1,900 municipalities in Japan have colorful, decorative manhole covers, many featuring anime characters. For example, the city of Kesennuma has Pokémon manhole covers (over 20 different designs), while Osaka has Gundam covers, and Tottori features Detective Conan (the author's hometown). But the fun fact: these aren't just for looks — the covers are designed with special non-slip patterns that also create music when driven over by cars at the right speed. One town, Sakura, has a manhole cover that plays the theme song of the anime Mushiuta when a car's tires pass over it in a specific rhythm. So yes, anime-themed street art that literally sings!

In Japan, there's a traditional sake-serving ceremony called "Kikizake" (taste comparison), but the anime fun fact relates to One Piece: the character Roronoa Zoro's signature three-sword style (Santoryu) was directly inspired by a real-life Japanese swordsman named Miyamoto Musashi, who famously dual-wielded two swords. Oda, the creator, simply added a third sword in Zoro's mouth. But here's the strange twist: there is a real martial arts technique called "Kuchi-dō" (mouth way) practiced by a handful of modern swordsmen — they can actually hold a wooden sword in their teeth and perform basic blocks and cuts. No one does three swords, but Zoro's ridiculous style has a tiny grain of truth!

Total Seasons: 2 + Movie & Specials
Premiered: Spring 2009

Synopsis:
A fresh high school year always means much to come, and one of those things is joining a club. Being in a dilemma about which club to join, Yui Hirasawa stumbles upon and applies for the Light Music Club, which she misinterprets to be about playing simple instruments, such as castanets. Unable to play an instrument, she decides to visit to apologize and quit.

Meanwhile, the Light Music Club faces disbandment due to a lack of members. This causes the club members to offer anything, from food to slacking off during club time, in order to convince Yui to join. Despite their efforts, Yui insists on leaving due to her lack of musical experience. As a last resort, they play a piece for Yui, which sparks her fiery passion and finally convinces her to join the club.

From then onward, it is just plain messing around with bits and pieces of practice. The members of the Light Music Club are ready to make their time together a delightful one!

In Japan, there is a real-life "Cat Island" called Aoshima — one of over a dozen "cat islands" where feline residents outnumber humans roughly 6 to 1. But the anime connection? The island's cats became internet famous after being featured in the anime Nyanbo! — a spin-off of the cat-themed anime Yotsuba&! The strangest fact, however, is that visitors are required to bring their own cat food because there are no stores on the island. Some tourists have even reported being "ambushed" by a gang of cats that know exactly which bags carry food — and they've learned to unzip backpacks with their teeth. So yes, anime-watching cats in real life might also be strategic thieves!

In 1997, an episode of the Pokémon anime titled "Dennō Senshi Porygon" (Electric Soldier Porygon) caused over 600 children in Japan to be hospitalized due to seizures and other symptoms. The culprit was a 4-second scene with rapidly alternating red and blue flashes (purposefully used to simulate explosions). This incident led to the creation of stricter broadcasting guidelines in Japan for flashing lights in animation. But here's the ironic fun fact: The Pokémon responsible for the scene was Porygon, not the more famous Pikachu. However, in the aftermath, Porygon and its evolutions were unfairly blamed and virtually banished from the anime forever — appearing only in brief cameos afterward. Meanwhile, Pikachu, who also appeared in the same scene, got off scot-free. To this day, fans joke that Porygon was the innocent scapegoat while yellow mouse walked away untouched!

In Japan, there's an official "Anime Pilgrimage" phenomenon, where fans visit real-life locations featured in their favorite anime. The most famous example is the city of Numazu in Shizuoka Prefecture, which appears in Love Live! Sunshine!! After the anime aired, tourism in Numazu jumped over 40% — that's an extra million visitors a year. But the fun fact? The city government got so tired of fans stealing small character standees from parks and train stations that they bolted life-sized anime girl cutouts directly into the concrete. Now you can sit next to a permanently locked-down Ruby Kurosawa on a public bench while enjoying a view of the actual harbor — which also now sells official "anime pilgrimage" maps at the tourist center.
