I thoroughly enjoyed the read.

I loved Malik and his anger.
I loved how he advocated for himself, and his commitment to figuring everything out.

I find myself deeply fascinated by Black readers who seem to have such an intense dislike for AAVE. Why? Why is AAVE consistently treated as a stereotype as opposed to the dialect it is?

I’m curious about why so many people seem unsettled by a character fully allowing themselves to feel their anger. Is that a generational gap? Remnants of religious indoctrination that tell us to turn away from our anger?

I’m actively working to resist the capitalistic urge to “crank out more” book boxes and continuing to be intentional and read allll the books I choose to include in a box.

Book bundles available using the link in my bio 🧡 We got a few options for y’all.

Double Feature is a curated book bundle where I pair a film that’s nostalgic to my childhood with a book written by a Black author.

After sitting with this idea for several months I decided to launch with Jim Carrey’s The Mask and Mumbo Jumbo written by Ishmael Reed.

Mumbo Jumbo was an incredibly timely read for me. I started the novel before the conversations around bonnets, du-rags, respectability politics, and anti-blackness exploded across my timelines. These conversations solidified my decision to launch with this pairing.

In the book, we have Hinckle Von Vampton, a white man focused on maintaining Western dominance. It’s his goal to destroy Jes Grew, and he does this by attempting to create a Black android designed to convince Black people that Jes Grew is evil.

Does this sound familiar?

If those online conversations piqued your interest, I strongly encourage you to read this book. For those who grab the bundle as you watch the movie and read the book, reflect on how people impacted by Jes Grew were perceived versus how Stanley Ipkiss navigated the world with his mask.

Either way, read mo Black books.

READ MO’ BLACK BOOKS 📚✨

This idea came to me when I set out to rebuild my physical media collection. In an era where AI companies are consuming and altering books to train their models, preserving Black books and stories that reflect our lived experiences and imagination has been deeply important to me.

I didn’t want just any books or movies. I wanted tangible media in my home that felt nostalgic and familiar. For the very first pairing, I matched Jim Carrey’s 1994 classic The Mask with Ishmael Reed’s masterpiece Mumbo Jumbo.

Pairing these two feels especially timely given the ongoing conversations surrounding respectability politics and anti-Blackness. Forces that are not only systemic but far too often perpetuated within our own community.

It comes with a few bookish goodies too
