Please consider donating to our NICU care package wishlist for Giving Tuesday today! I can't even tell you how uplifting it is to receive a care package in the NICU, especially during a holiday. When you have other people thinking of you and supporting you, it makes the experience more joyful and you don't feel so alone.

Happy World Prematurity Day and Happy 1st Birthday to Poppy’s Purpose 🎉

A year ago when we started Poppy’s Purpose we set out to send care packages to families currently facing the struggle of having a premature baby in the NICU. So far to date we have created and donated 232 care packages! That’s 232 families that know they are loved and seen during a very dark time.

We also hosted our very first 5K to celebrate Poppy’s first birthday and plan to host the second one this June.

We are now in the middle of planning for our biggest package drop off ever where we are teaming up with Row Baby to bless 200 families this holiday season at both Toledo Hospital NICU and Cincinnati Children’s NICU.

Happy to all of the NICU mamas out there.

Many people don’t understand what it’s like to have to wait days or weeks to hold your baby for the first time, or not be able to take them home right after they’re born. They don’t understand what it’s like to see your own baby on a ventilator to help them breathe, or with a feeding tube to help them eat, or attached to tons of wires to monitor them 24/7. They don’t understand what it feels like to be torn between spending time with your baby in a hospital or at home with your other family members or kids.

You’re not alone, NICU mama.

When I was in the NICU with Rowan, any small, thoughtful gift or act of kindness made such a big impact on my day. After some time in the hospital, you start to feel so alone and detached from everyone else and the outside world. The days blend together, the routine becomes familiar, the medical talk becomes normal. You become so broken down and vulnerable, you need some light to come in through the cracks to brighten your darkness. I design the products in my shop to be that light for others. ✨

We have friends that live near us in Toledo who have a kidney baby on dialysis right now. We met them through Cincinnati Children’s connections. Their son was also just diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and is now doing chemo in addition to nightly dialysis. The family is going through a lot right now. Just a reminder for all of the NICU mamas out there, sitting in a dark hospital room wondering when you’re going to get a break from all of this. Look for the light. Look for something small that makes you smile with the slightest glimmer of hope, like your baby’s tiny fingers and toes, the kindness of your nurse, the sliver of sunlight shining through the blinds. It’s easy to sink into the darkness and shut everything out, but I promise if you look for the light, it will keep you going through all of the exhaustion and unknown. ✨

Our NICU Nurse artwork was originally designed for and given to Rowan’s primary NICU nurses who took care of him during his time in the NICU. These nurses became family to us and were basically my best friends because I spent every day by Rowan’s side, helping the nurses take care of him. They have one of the hardest jobs on earth, but somehow always had so much energy, positivity, humor, and thoughtfulness. We always joked that Rowan had 5 moms (me and each of his main NICU nurses). We miss them! Luckily, Rowan’s Aunt is a NICU nurse and we get to keep her forever and ever 💙
