Greetings all. I am pleased and excited to announce the reopening of Thimble & Awl at our new location in beautiful, northern New Mexico. I appreciate everyone's patience and support, during the period of our move across country, getting set up in our new home and life, and the construction of my new studio. There are a few minor things to finish up, but I am ready to get back to work. If you would like to place an order for any of my bespoke, period garments, please send an email to [email protected]. I will be adding some new items and offering a special discount shortly. I am looking forward to working with you.

A note on bespoke clothing. When I partner with a client, to tailor a garment for them, I require the client to provide a set of their measurements that are specific to the garment. This provides the client with a custom fit that is unique to them. If the client chooses to pass their garment on to a new owner, unless that new owner has the same measurements, the garment will not fit correctly. Some part of that garment will be too long, short, loose, or tight. If you have the opportunity to purchase one of my garments second hand, please ask the owner for all of the measurements so you can ensure a correct fit before you purchase.

DOUBLE BREASTED SHIRTS 1860s - 1890s
In the day, these shirts were called double-breasted overshirts or uniform shirts. The overshirts were universally advertised in print as blue/navy blue flannel with pearl buttons although red ones do appear. The uniform shirts on the other hand, according to period newspaper stories, came in a variety of colors and combinations. In general, early-style "bibs" were bigger and covered more of the chest, and as styles changed, the "bibs" became smaller. Overshirt "bibs" also tended to be partially sewn to the shirt body, which creates a handy pocket. While uniform "bibs" were frequently detachable. Most "bibs" were plain but the uniform style could be decorated. This tended to be done aftermarket so they are unique except for baseball teams and Fire Companies who wore matching uniforms. Nautical themes such as the fouled anchor were popular.

SPORTING SHIRTS
In the 1880s and into the 90s, a variety of shirts were designed for sporting activities. Lawn tennis, baseball, bicycling, and yachting are examples. These garments were made of wool flannels and various cottons and had unique closures. The gentlemen of the western frontier adopted for everyday wear and were very popular.
