Another order finished and back to it’s farm today! ♥️ it was an absolutely honor to work with Valiant Dawn Fiber on this collection of natural yarn & roving. She has some incredible batches, ready to sell!

At least once a week we get comments about specks of VM, dirt, or “debris” in fiber as we share it going through various machines.

We’ve mentioned it many times but for those new — here’s some things to consider:

1 - VM and dirt is normal. This fiber came from ANIMALS! Not a factory. It lived outside in nature. Evidence of that is normal (and some would say, desirable).

2 - What you bring in is what you’ll get back (for the most part). Do we wash out lanolin, large quantities of dirt, and VM? Absolutely. But if an animal (or its fleece) was not handled/managed well unfortunately we cannot undo that. That’s okay though! ALL fiber has a purpose. Roving or yarn with more VM than desired can be used for outerwear, dryerballs, felting, and so many other projects.

3 - Dirt/VM left after scouring (washing) continues to fall out more and more every single machine it runs through. Evidence in this video where the locks on the carder belt still had flecks of dirt, however the finished yarn had almost none.

We’ll continue to get these comments on videos - but we’ll also continue to help share/educate for those who thing we just don’t care and make dirty yarn 😅

It’s not our first time processing Shetland or babydoll but it is the first time doing it here at the new mill which is always fun!

The spinner is always the difficult child here 😂

Meet the carder! This is the second machine used for processing in our small fiber mill. This is where roving is born!

We are so incredibly excited about these beautiful handmade mugs we designed with Hanna Greig-Steinmetz 😍 they are truly breathtaking, pieces of art, and just perfect for the wool lovers! ♥️

We have just a handful available - PICK UP ONLY! Sorry, no shipping. If you can’t come to the mill now and would like to reserve one, just shoot us a message ☺️

Machine tour! Step #1 after washing is THE PICKER! The picker helps pull apart clumpy fibers so that are ready for carding. Think about the different between a cotton ball vs. cotton candy — after two passes through this machine the clumps of fiber and much more airy and spread apart! This is probably the smallest and quietest machine we have. Check back next to see step 2 - the carder!
