A ship doesn’t have to reach the open sea to become a legend.

On August 10, 1628, Sweden’s warship Vasa sank on her maiden voyage in Stockholm harbor. A gust pushed the unstable ship over far enough for water to pour through her open lower gunports. Within minutes, she was on the bottom.

Nearly 400 years later, her story still gives boaters plenty to think about.

On August 18, 1899, Rasmus Midgett entered hurricane-driven surf alone to rescue the crew of the wrecked Priscilla. It remains one of the most remarkable individual rescues in American maritime history.
