What was planned as a one-hour raid turned into a night-long fight. Rangers, Delta operators, SEALs, Air Force PJs and CCTs, and the pilots and crews of the 160th SOAR were pinned down in a city that came alive against them. Two Black Hawks went down. Instead of leaving, men moved toward the crash sites to protect their brothers.
Master Sergeant Gary Gordon and Sergeant First Class Randall Shughart volunteered to defend the downed crew of Super 64. They knew the odds, and both gave their lives. Both received the Medal of Honor.
Eighteen Americans were killed and dozens more wounded. No one was left behind.
Thirty-three years later, we still say their names and remember what they showed us about brotherhood and duty. 🇺🇸
Never forget.
