I was a kid growing up under poverty, substance abuse, religious abuse, domestic abuse. 5 years old, isolated, desperate for my future husband. Defining him. Willing him into my future from a piece of paper and some broken crayons. My hero to save me from my dad. Make something different with me. Something safe. Now I’m midlife in a long term trauma bonded relationship that’s starting to heal. A lot comes up. I don’t push any of it back down any more. I can smell this poem. Smells like survival and strength to me and I’m so proud of us for finally honoring and protecting the kids that became us, instead of the ignoring and shushing we’ve been doing ❤︎⁠
