Des Moines proudly received the designation as Local 4 on February 28,1918, the fourth recognized local to charter with the IAFF. From its inception, the goals of the Des Moines Association of Professional Firefighters has remained unchanged; a decent wage for a skilled, difficult and dangerous profession; protection for the firefighter's family; a pension tailored to limited working years on the

job with cost of living adjustments; modern protective clothing and equipment to make a very dangerous job, as safe as possible.

This call came in as a public assist, and we arrived to find this gentleman stuck on his roof. Never fear though, we have the equipment for this type of thing!

No two days are the same here and we love what we do!

Last week we came together at The Shop DSM to celebrate our retirees, with our annual Retiree Steak Dinner. It's a time to honor those that have recently retired with plaques, as well as present our yearly scholarships to the children of DMFD Local 4 members. It's a fun time to see old faces, and honor some hard working high school graduates!

Congrats to all those retirees, and the 2026 Local 4 scholarship award winners!

As the 2026 EMS week comes to a close today, we’d like to thank all of our EMS providers that sacrifice day in and day out to ride the ambulance and provide such a high level of care. Some of our members end up spending their entire career on an ambulance, while others aren’t so fortunate to have an ambulance at their station.

We know many people think we only put out fires, but our DMFD Local 4 members do so much more! Happy EMS week everyone!

"OK kid, let me show you how you pound out this tenderloin properly!"

Not sure if that was the actual conversation, but meals in the firehouse are a big deal for those on shift. We pay for our own meals, and split the cost, eating a family style meal every night together as a crew. Specific nights are specific meals, and many traditions go back years before any of our current members even got on the job.

Tonight we are having tenderloins, and we hope to have them hot and fresh.
But... ya never know when that bell is gonna go off.😉
