Prior to being called the Tigers, Detroit’s baseball club went by names like the Detroits and the Wolverines before their Major league debut. In 1901 they petitioned Detroit Light guard for the name and the permission was granted. In April of 1901, sports nor fashion would ever be the same because of one simple gesture.
