Many assume poster rarity hinges on print run, but an underappreciated factor is the paper sizing method: suppliers switched from gelatin-based sizing to synthetic resin sizing in the 1930s–40s, and that change altered ink absorption and long-term color stability. Posters printed on gelatin-sized stock retain brighter halftones but are more prone to cockling; conservation labs use microscopic fiber and sizing analysis to accurately date and attribute prints beyond just typography or artist credit.

At Chester's Finds we examine paper sizing and fiber under magnification to date posters and assess conservation needs before listing.

Vintage Store Shopping Tip

If you see it, love it and can not decide if you should buy it. Think of this. "Will I regret not getting it when I get home?" If the answer is yes, buy it! Our inventory is unique, and it may not be there the next day.

Many collectors track signatures, but fewer know that mid-20th-century ticket stubs often include invisible ink control numbers applied with iron gall formulations; these darken over decades and can confirm a stub's issuance when spectral analysis matches known issuer inks. Museums and advanced graders use nonvisible-light inspection to verify provenance of high-value game tickets and passes.
