A lesser-known turning point in sports memorabilia collecting was the 1950s rise of team-issued game programs and yearbooks as collectible artifacts: before then fans mainly kept tickets and trade cards, but growing team marketing and stadium photo coverage created durable, officially produced paper items that carry roster changes, contemporary photos, and localized advertising—making them far more useful for precise dating and provenance than unsigned ephemera.

At Chester's Finds we assess program printing details, rosters, and ads to verify dates and local provenance before listing.

Added new mid-century and vintage items to our booth yesterday. This gem of a find! A yellow sectional sofa that we originally purchased for a client, but their plans changed. Now it's up for grabs.

This piece is unique and you don't come across pieces like this often.

A less-known authentication clue for collectible bottles is the early use of crown-cap embossing codes: from the 1890s into the 1930s some breweries and bottlers stamped production or plant codes into the metal crown rather than the glass, and those tiny stamped numerals correlate with region-specific bottling lines and closure suppliers. Cross-referencing crown codes with glass mold seams and base marks helps confirm a bottle-opener pairing and production locale.

At Chester's Finds we examine crown embossing, glass marks, and opener fit to verify matched bottle-and-opener sets.

Ancient sculptors often used abrasive sand and pounding tools, but a less-known continuity is the sustained use of bow-drill drilling from antiquity into modern workshop practice; bow-drills produced fine, controlled holes and surface textures that differ microscopically from rotary-electrotool marks, allowing specialists to distinguish hand-powered ancient work from later restorations or modern replicas.

At Chester's Finds we examine drill mark morphology to authenticate carved stone items and identify period-appropriate tool use.

A diagnostic feature in antique glass evolution is the shift from pontil-mark removal to polished bases around the 1830s–1850s: early free-blown or mold-blown glass often retains a rough pontil scar, while manufacturers began reheating and grinding bases for a smoother finish as mass production and table etiquette favored seamless presentation. Microscopic pontil remnants or polished-base tooling marks help separate pre-industrial studio pieces from 19th-century factory output.

At Chester's Finds we inspect base finishes and pontil marks to date glassware and determine whether pieces are studio-made or factory-produced.
