Build Your Pickleball Court Like a Pro (Without Losing Your Mind)
We are talking Pickleball Court Dimensions, from your “Actually Want to Read Pickleball Court Guide”. So sit back and enjoy our fun, clear, and chaos-free lesson.
Hello Dunkirk Sports Zone fans & family!
If you’re ready to build your own pickleball court—or you just want to win an argument with that overly-confident friend who thinks the “kitchen” is for snacks—we’ve got you covered. Today’s feature is our lighthearted, no-nonsense guide to pickleball court dimensions.
Let’s break it down—quick, simple, and easy enough for anyone to follow.
Official Court Size
A standard pickleball court measures:
20 feet wide
44 feet long
Same for singles and doubles. No guessing required.
The Famous “Kitchen” Zone
The Non-Volley Zone (aka “the kitchen”):
Extends 7 feet from the net on both sides
Volleying from inside it? Not allowed. Bringing snacks? Also frowned upon.
Space You Need Around the Court
This is where many people get it wrong. You need more room than just the court itself.
Minimum play area: 30 ft x 60 ft
Ideal play area: 40 ft x 64 ft
This extra space gives players room to move safely.
Indoor Courts
If you’re planning an indoor setup, check the vertical clearance first!
18–20 feet above the court keeps your lobs safe from ducts, beams, and ceiling fans.
Net Height
36 inches at the sidelines
34 inches at the center
Yes, that 2-inch dip is intentional.
Lighting Tips
Use indirect LED lighting indoors
Outdoors, avoid aiming lights directly at players
Best color temperature: 4000K–5000K
Lighting = visibility = better gameplay.
Surface Options
Your court surface impacts everything from safety to ball bounce.
Choose from:
Asphalt
Concrete
Gym flooring
Repurposed tennis courts
Each has pros and cons—pick based on budget and environment.
Last but Not Least: Multi-Court Layouts
If you’re building more than one court:
Leave at least 10 feet between courts to reduce collisions and rogue ball interference.
