Richard P. Hobson, born on August 17, 1870, in Greensboro, Alabama, was a notable figure in the Spanish-American War. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1889 and served as a naval constructor. Hobson gained fame during the war for his daring attempt to block the entrance to Santiago Harbor in Cuba by sinking the USS Merrimac. Despite the mission’s failure, he was hailed as a hero for his bravery. After the war, he pursued a career in politics, serving as a U.S. Congressman from Alabama. Hobson remained active in public service and naval affairs until his death on March 16, 1937.
