RVA Big Market Relocation - 5/16/26

After continued coordination with the City of Richmond, the RVA Big Market will be relocating once again to the other side of the Azalea Garden Pond at Bryan Park for the Summer Season.

On May 16th, the RVA Big Market will be setting up in the parking lot across from the Azalea Gardens. We refer to this lot as "Picnic Lot", and is where we hosted the RVA Big Market during our Winter Season.

We know this may feel like a sudden change, especially since the market has recently returned to its traditional footprint earlier this spring, and especially after operating in this area during the winter months. We understand that this may be confusing or frustrating for vendors and customers who have already adjusted to more than one location change in a relatively short period of time.

The reason for this shift is that discussions with the City have continued to evolve as longer-term plans for the park have become clearer. This summer relocation is part of a broader collaborative effort to support the park’s environmental needs, allow for ecological work in the market’s traditional footprint, and prepare for upcoming Fall Line Trail construction.

While this has required us all to stay flexible, we are committed to working closely with the City, our vendors, and our market community to make this transition as smooth and successful as possible.

The good news is that the market is still staying at Bryan Park, and we are already hard at work adjusting the layout, planning vendor placement, reviewing parking logistics, and preparing updated maps and signage for the new location.

While the market will look and feel a little different from our usual summer setup, our goal remains the same: to continue hosting a vibrant and welcoming community event each Saturday.

We know that flexibility will be needed from all of us as we make this adjustment together, and we truly appreciate the patience and support of our vendors and customers throughout the process.

The RVA Big Market is a community effort in every sense, and we are confident that, with good communication and cooperation, we can make this new arrangement work well for everyone. 🩷🌞🩷🌞🩷

Written //5.3.20//

This afternoon Brayden was walking with us just like any other 9 year old boy and for just a moment it made me sad because he isn’t like any other 9 year old boy.

He has intellectual disabilities. He doesn’t talk like other 9 year olds. He can’t always make his hands go where you tell him to. He can’t tell when he is sick. He can’t put on his shoes. He isn’t potty-trained.

There are so many things Brayden can’t do, might never do and when I start thinking about it, “what he can’t do” can take over my thoughts and worries consume my mind.

Then, Brayden looks at me and smiles. Suddenly, I can focus on what he can do.

He can hug you and mean it. He can persistently demand to play basketball. He can navigate YouTube like a boss. He can follow routines. He advocates for the dog when she needs to go potty and we ignore her.

Like everyone who loves someone who is “different”, I worry.

I worry about his present and his future. I worry who will take care of him when he’s an adult and we’re no longer around.

I worry about people who don’t understand, who won’t understand, who will use his condition as an excuse to be unkind, inhumane, and evil.

My life is better because he’s in it. He brings out a better side of me and I’ve seen him do the same to other people. When they meet him, they slow down a moment and they too smile.

Today, I tell myself, it’s going to be alright.
And I smile.

If you’ve ever wondered what inclusion looks like, this was Brayden’s unified track meet last week. Seeing him and all his friends laughing, high-fiving, and supporting each other so naturally…was a reminder that inclusion is taught and modeled!!

So proud of our boy 🫶🏼
