Some authors write stories. This one decided to step into his own.

Meet the Book Shaman!

Author Dave Reed came to OuterRim Creatives with a pretty cool idea. He wanted to bring his Book Shaman identity to life, creating a character he could actually become while promoting his books and connecting with readers.

And Katie and Todd were all in.

There's a lot to love about this costume. The earthy colors, layered robes, custom runes, and all those little details make you feel like this guy has a library full of stories and probably a few secrets.

Katie created all the soft goods, from the flowing outer robe and tunic to the sash and custom tailoring. She did some beautiful work here, especially with how the fabrics hang and move together.

Todd designed the custom runic artwork and decorative graphics throughout the costume, giving the Book Shaman some of his most recognizable details.

And seeing Dave actually become the Book Shaman? That's the fun part.

Every great adventure starts with the right gear. And Lara Croft has never been one to travel light.

Ancient ruins, forgotten tombs, questionable decisions involving collapsing temples. You know, a typical Thursday for Lara. 😂

Our latest custom commission takes us into the world of Tomb Raider with a handcrafted backpack inspired by the Unified Lara Croft design.

Katie brought her incredible talent for sewing, construction, and finishing to this piece, while Todd worked alongside her on the design and bringing the details together. Getting those details right matters to both of us, especially when we're recreating something fans know so well.

And yes, that's Katie modeling it! Sometimes the best way to test a piece is to put it on and see how it actually wears.

We're pretty proud of this one.

Somewhere under the big top, things are getting a little weird. 🎪🤡

Straight out of Killer Klowns from Outer Space, meet our latest custom commission: Shorty!

Our client came to us with a wild concept, and Katie brought it to life. From the fitted satin corset and puff sleeves to the ridiculous number of red pom-poms, green sequined stars, and layers of blue tulle, this one was all about getting those wonderfully bizarre details right.

And Katie absolutely nailed it.

This is one of those projects we love at OuterRim Creatives. Todd and Katie get to take a character, work through the challenges together, and turn a fan's vision into something they can actually wear.

We're especially happy that our client loves how it turned out!

The booth is busy, the costumes are out, and this is exactly why we love doing this.

OuterRim Creatives is built by two people who see costumes very differently, and that’s what makes the partnership work.

Katie sees fit, fabric, movement, tailoring, and finish.

Todd sees armor, props, structure, paint, weathering, and how to make fictional pieces work in the real world.

Then we build it together.

That back and forth has shaped OuterRim from the beginning. We challenge each other, fix problems together, and care way too much about details most people will never notice.

NDK Day Two, and we are right in the middle of it.

The booth is busy, the costumes are out, and we’ve already had some great conversations with people who love this stuff as much as we do.

That’s one of our favorite parts of conventions.

OuterRim Creatives is a Colorado custom costume studio, and every build comes from the two of us working together.

Katie brings the tailoring, fit, patterning, fabric, drape, and finish.

Todd brings the armor, props, 3D fabrication, paint, weathering, and structure.

But after years of building side by side, it’s never really that simple. We bounce ideas off each other, solve problems together, push each other when something isn’t quite right, and keep working until the character feels like the character.

That partnership is at the center of OuterRim.

NDK, we finally made it.

This is our first year at Nan Desu Kan, and OuterRim Creatives is here all weekend.

If you’ve ever looked at an anime character and thought, I want that costume to actually look like THAT, come find us.

That’s what we build.

Katie handles the tailoring, patterning, fit, fabric, drape, and finishing that make a costume move like it belongs to the character.

Todd handles the armor, props, 3D fabrication, structure, paint, and weathering.

Then we bring both sides together until the whole character feels right.

We’re a Colorado costume and fabrication studio building custom, convention-ready cosplay for people who care about the details.

Wolf O’Donnell was never going to show up quietly.

This costume needed the purple, the claws, and that huge Star Wolf insignia across the back. It had to feel cocky, dangerous, and just a little louder than Fox McCloud would appreciate.

Katie Strength built the jacket from the ground up. She handled the patterning, fit, color blocking, and all those purple and magenta panels. Getting that enormous graphic to sit correctly across the back wasn’t easy, but she pulled it off beautifully.

Todd Welch made the armor, gauntlets, and claws, then painted and weathered everything until it felt like Wolf had actually been out there causing problems in the Lylat System.

This costume shows exactly why we work so well together. Katie knows how to make a character’s clothing fit and move on a real person. Todd builds the harder pieces and brings in the wear, damage, and attitude. Somewhere between the sewing machine, the printers, and a lot of purple, Wolf showed up.
