These are the days of a child between us,
a child sleeping in the middle of our bed, with a foot in my stomach and a head on your chest, each night.
The days I hug you in the kitchen, and a child sneaks between us to join our embrace.
The days of a child sitting on each of our laps while we’re trying to take a bite of a sandwich.
The days of a child tugging at our pants and interrupting our conversation
to ask for a snack,
to say, "mom, I like Bluey!"
or to tattletale on a sibling.
But when they get older, we won’t be able to spend entire days together as a family. They’ll be pulled in so many directions: by school projects, extra-curriculars, and friends. We’ll no longer be the center of their universe but a supporting role in their lives.
We will have uninterrupted conversations,
silent hugs and kisses,
and hot cups of coffee.
There will be so much time for just you and me.
And we’ll miss this
and the calls of “Mommy, can you push me?” “Mommy, come here!” “Watch me, Mommy!” at every turn.
So, these are the days of a child between us,
