This morning brought a sadness I wasn't expecting.
Lying quietly on top my garden gate was a beautiful, bright yellow bird.
Just yesterday it filled the sky with song. As I held it in my hands, I was reminded how fragile and precious life really is. Another lesson from the garden. Growth, abundance, beauty, and sometimes letting go.
The little bird's time was short, but its song, color, and presence were gifts all the same.

One peony. One small vase. Huge impact.
When it first opened, it was the brightest salmon pink. Each day it softened, slowly fading into the most beautiful creamy white.
The peony reminds me that beauty isn't lost with time,

From Ranch Post to Fairy Garden Gate
These old posts once help up the carport on the ranch where I grew up. Brother saved them for me as he created his new garage.
They stood through Montana winds, summer heat, winter snow, and lots of kids learning to drive. Time left them weathered, but not finished.
Using the ancient Japanese technique of charring wood, I gave them new life. The fire removed years of old paint and revealed the beautiful grain hidden beneath.
This summer they'll begin a new chapter, supporting the gate to our fairy garden and protecting young plants as they grow.
I love the idea that
something old and
well, loved can still have
important work to do.
Sometimes the best garden
treasures are the ones with
a story.

This month I'll be building the foundation of our fairy garden, adding hardscape, planting trees, and adding compost.
The entrance will be an old door from Uncle Ted's place, complete with its original hand-forged hinges. It will hand from charred ranch posts that once supported the carport where I grew up. The remaining posts will support wire fencing, help protect young plants from curious deer.
As the garden grows, I'll be sharing plant identification, learning from others, and exploring the many ways people use the plants growing around them.
Every piece has a story.
Every plant has a purpose.
And every season brings
something new to learn.

Garden Tip from Goodie's Covey:
Cardboard Magic for W**d Suppression
Did you know one of the best w**d barriers might already be headed for the recycling bin?
We use plain cardboard in our garden to help suppress w**ds naturally. Simply remove tape, labels, and staples, lay the cardboard directly over the soil, overlap the edges, water it well, and cover it with mulch.
Benefits of cardboard:
Blocks sunlight from reaching w**d seeds
helps retain precious moister
breaks down naturally and feeds soil life
Encourages healthy earthworms
Saves time spent pulling w**ds
The best part? As the cardboard slowly disappears, it becomes part of the soil instead of adding waste to the landfill.
Growing a garden doesn't have to mean fighting w**ds every day. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the most effective.

Let's begin our fairy garden. In the first book, Owl will be guiding you to find your spot. This will be mine. As the stories grow we will be adding the element of each character to our fairy garden. It can be big or small. Mine is an area of about 35 feet by 26 feet. Yours may be a flowerpot. The size doesn't matter it's the intention that we set as we add our elements to our creations. My hope is that we can build a community, share our stories, and create something magical and fun together.
