Here’s why 👇

Every time you open the fridge, everything sitting in the door gets exposed to room temperature air. That constant back and forth in temperature causes your breast milk to spoil faster. And after everything you put into pumping every single drop, the last thing you want is to lose it to something totally preventable.

So where should it go? The back of the center shelf. That’s the coldest, most stable spot in your entire fridge with the least amount of temperature change. The CDC and Mayo Clinic both actually recommend it for breast milk storage specifically.

Here’s what we wish every mama knew before baby comes:

1) Get your pump through your insurance early. Most insurances start covering breast pumps around the 27 week mark. If you have TRICARE, we’ve got you — link in bio for more info.

2) Once your pump arrives, open and unbox it right away. Don’t let it sit in the corner collecting dust until the day you need it most.

3) Wash and sterilize all your pump parts before baby comes. Read the pump’s quick start guide. It’ll have the list of all the parts you need to wash and sterilize before first use.

4) Practice putting it together at least once so you’re not Googling assembly instructions at 2am with a hungry newborn in your arms.

5) Measure your fl**ge size ahead of time. The right fit makes a bigger difference than you think — and the hospital lactation consultants can help you confirm it if you bring your pump with you.

Speaking of which, if you can, bring your pump to the hospital!! The lactation consultants there can help you use it, check your sizing, and answer every question you have while you still have support around you!!

Ever notice how the moment your baby latches, you suddenly need water like your life depends on it? That’s not in your head.

It’s oxytocin — the same hormone responsible for your letdown. When it rises, it signals your brain to feel thirsty, which is your body’s way of making sure you replace the fluids you’re about to lose. It’s also why you might feel warm or a little sleepy during a feed or pump session.

Breast milk is about 90% water, so your body is doing a lot behind the scenes to keep up. The takeaway: keep water within reach, always — you’ll thank yourself later.
