Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what makes small businesses successful, and for me, it has never been about beating out my competition. Some of my greatest mentors in business are other boutique owners. They’ve shared advice, experiences, and encouragement that helped me grow, and I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without them. Two of the largest boutique owners in the western industry have literally told me almost Word for Word “I know you can do this and YOU just need to keep going!”
As we continue to grow, I’m looking at expanding our wholesale program for our silk wild rags. One thing that’s important to me is that wholesale isn’t just about selling a product. I want to help other brick-and-mortar owners sell that product successfully. That means offering styling tutorials, educational videos, and resources that help customers feel confident wearing and enjoying their wild rags.
If you’re a new boutique owner, my advice is simple: find your uniqueness and lean into it. Reach out to other boutique owners. See what they’re doing, learn from them, and then figure out what your own community needs. There is plenty of room for all of us.
To me, “boutique” means curated. It means personal. It means unique. We are not Walmart. We are not Amazon. We offer handmade goods, thoughtfully selected collections, and a shopping experience that can’t be replicated by a big-box retailer.
Most importantly, teach.
Don’t just show a shirt—show customers how to style it. Don’t just show jewelry—teach them how to layer it. Don’t just sell a wild rag—show them the outfit you’d wear it with, the knot you’d tie, and where you’d wear it.
One of my favorite parts of this business is opening my messages and seeing photos from women asking, “Would this work with my show shirt?” or “What would you pair with this dress?” Sometimes it’s a summer dress, sometimes it’s a wedding dress, and sometimes it’s a rodeo outfit. Helping fill in those gaps and build confidence is what makes this fun.
Find your people. Find your niche. Keep teaching. The rest will follow.
