When the Lake County Audubon Society reached out to me, they asked me to look into the flora of the Great Lake. They migrating piping plovers who have visited the shores were named after the flowers and plants that grow there. I learned so much!

Conservation Note
Did you know? The piping plover is listed as a threatened species in the Great Lakes region. 🌊 Their nesting habitat, open sandy beaches, puts them in direct competition with human recreation, and their populations have struggled for decades. Conservation efforts by groups like the Audubon Society have been critical to their survival. I’m so grateful this collection gave me the chance to learn their story and share it. A portion of my heart (and my sketchbook) now permanently belongs to these little birds. 🐦

Not just plovers — the flowers deserve their moment too. 🌸 Native Great Lakes wildflowers are woven throughout this collection, named and illustrated alongside the birds that inhabit the same fragile shoreline ecosystems. I loved researching which plants actually grow where these little birds nest and forage. Nature has already done the hard work of pairing them beautifully, I just tried to keep up. Shop the scarves and ties at the link in bio.

The average clutch size for a piping plover is four eggs. Females lay these eggs over a period of about six to seven days in a shallow, sandy scrape. They lay their clutches by shorelines and sometimes even parking lots.

The Design Story
Every scarf starts with a story. 🌊 This collection began with a conversation with the President of the Lake Shore Audubon Society, who asked me to bring the piping plover to life through my illustrations. I spent hours studying their delicate markings, their quick little feet on the sand, the way they seem almost too small for the vast shoreline they call home. The result? Two scarf designs, two tie designs, and a deep appreciation for how much a small bird can teach you. Shop at the link in bio.

Not just plovers, the flowers deserve their moment too. 🌸 Native Great Lakes wildflowers are woven throughout this special collection. The Lake County Audubon Society named the baby piping plovers after the flowers that grow in the same fragile shoreline ecosystems. I loved researching which plants grow where these little birds nest and forage. Shop the scarves and ties at the link in bio.
