As a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, this is how I would offer support to any of the kids in my life while they are in a big wave of emotional intensity. I would say supportive things that don’t need an answer from the child (big emotions = less access to communication). I would acknowledge just how intense or overwhelming what they are experiencing is and name that they are not alone in it. The emotion may feel too big for their body, but as an adult I can handle it and I will keep them safe through it. We will ride the wave of the emotion together until it dissipates and we feel okay again. We will sit with it for as long as it takes- there is no rush to “feel better”.
