“Any Like Numbers” does not mean any collection of numbers—and that tiny word trips up plenty of smart new players.

Here’s the simple version:

“Any” lets you choose a number from 1 through 9.

“Like” means every numbered group in that hand must use the same chosen number.

Choose 7? The numbered portions stay 7s. Then use the card’s colors and parenthetical note to determine the correct suit and dragon relationships.

Easy memory trick: Any choice. One number.

Matching tiles can make calling feel irresistible—but a call changes more than your rack.

Before you reach for that discard, check the timing, the grouping, the X or C, and whether the exposure truly fits one current-card line. Then ask the strategy question: Does exposing actually make your hand stronger, or are you trading flexibility for a tile that merely looks useful?

Before Mahjong became a weekly ritual at American tables, it had already traveled through Chinese cities, migration routes, family traditions and communities that carried far more than rules.

Mahjong did not begin in an ancient imperial court, and Joseph Babcock did not invent it.
