I have just completed my third year of business as Chantel’s Alterations and although I had trepidation initially on what it would feel like to serve others in such a humble way after having owned my own apparel company, I have found this work so rewarding in many ways. Firstly due to all the wonderful and interesting people I have been able to meet. I look fondly to wards seeing them time after time and getting to know them. Many customers I feel I can now call friends.
I am so thankful for this skill I acquired from my mother when I was very young: who must have learned it as a young child during the n**i occupation of Belgium. During that time they retreated from the city and hid in a cellar of a country house for years and nearly starved to death. They lived in fear. They struggled to clothe themselves and their growing children all while family members perished due to lack of medical care in their presense before the war ended.
My great grandmother and grandmother (solely, for all their husbands abandoned them) took a huge risk and retrieved an American parachute to sew clothes for their children.
I can say that those strong women’s blood most certainly flows through my veins with pride. I am proud of the humble skill they passed to me allowing me to experiment with my love of art and fashion and always provided me and mine a means to dress in style even when we didn’t have the means.
My foremothers did not reflect much on the hardships they endured during world wars 1&2 and triumphed the rest of their lives rebuilding and overcoming much adversity. Their lives were short due to impact those rough times had on their bodies and brains, and because of them, I am proud to say “I sew”.
Sewing is a dying art in western civilization and I’m flattered to feel that so many people appreciate my skills.
Lord, I have felt so blessed to have skills allowing me to provide for me and my family time and time again!
Thank you
Chantel
