🎪 When the Pan-American Exposition closed its gates on November 2, 1901, nearly 125,000 people came out for the finale. Almost none of them knew how long it would actually take for the fairy-tale city they had just visited to disappear for good.

Most of the exposition's soaring towers and palaces were never meant to last. They were built as "staff," plaster and burlap over wood frames, dazzling for a season but never permanent. The Chicago House Wrecking Company bought the buildings for eighty thousand dollars in February 1902 and started tearing them down that March, salvaging wiring and fixtures to resell by catalog. 🏗️ The job dragged on for years. The Temple of Music itself did not finally come down until August 1903, and one worker, Bert Marren, lost his life falling from the Electric Tower during the teardown.

By 1909 the whole fairground had become an ordinary Buffalo neighborhood. Only one grand building survives today, the former New York State Building, now home to the Buffalo History Museum. 💙
