FAQ: "Are any of your tear jars wearable?"

A: Yes, most any of them can be adapted for wearing! The photo below shows how I normally do it--a "collar" is attached to the neck of the vessel and then jump rings attach that to the chain.

If you want a tear jar for wearing, just send me a message so we can discuss specifics, such as chain length. I am happy to work with you on customizations. (The tear jar shown is not for sale--it is the personal one I wear and I'm using it as an example only.)

Q. "Is that wire wrapped around that tear jar?"

A. Nope, it just looks like it. It is actually glass with silver in it. The base vessel is made first, and then this decoration is applied in the same work session. After the application of this special glass, I use the flame of my torch almost like a paint brush. The heat of the flame raises the silver to the surface of the glass and makes it shine like wire. It is one of my favorite techniques!

1.75" x 1", available July 1 at AbednegoCreations.com

Q: "Why are corks used in these elegant little glass vessels? Wouldn't a glass stopper be better?"

A. A glass stopper might look more appropriate, and would perhaps be expected if this was meant for perfume. But cork is used purposefully, and adds to the symbolism of the vessel.

Natural cork allows for evaporation over time if not dipped in wax or another substance as barrier layer. Historically, when the contents of the tear jar had evaporated, this signaled the end of the mourning period.

In my contemporary artistic renditions, the cork is a reminder that "For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven," as Ecclesiastes 3:1 says.

Does this mean the sorrow represented no longer matters? Absolutely not! (Refer back to Ps. 56:8). Yet we know all of human life has seasons-different for everyone, yes, just as we are each uniquely made, yet seasons nonetheless.

This tear jar is made with black glass and dichroic glass (the colorful sparkles) and measures approximately 2.25" x 1". It will be available for purchase in the product drop on my website on July 1. Each tear jar purchased comes with a hand fabricated stand, and an enclosure card with the verse inspiration and abbreviated history.

Q: "What is a tear jar?"

A: It is a physical reminder that God cares about the things that cause us sorrow and pain. Psalm 56:8 says "You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book." Sometimes it can seem like even our closest loved ones don't understand the depth of our pain, but God always does, and we can trust that He will not minimize, shame or condemn us for any of our sorrows!

Tear jars have been found in ancient gravesites, and we know they were used to collect and store tears off and on throughout history.

My tear jars do have the capacity to hold a small amount of liquid, but are really more useful as a reminder that our sorrows matter. They can be a thoughtful and meaningful gift for anyone enduring a loss or challenging time.

Look for my next post to learn why tear jars have corks.

This tear jar is made with lavender-colored glass and measures 1.75" x 1". The decoration of stripes and dots is a silver-infused glass which is applied molten, during the same work session. When heated, the silver causes a fuming effect, creating both the shiny, metallic look and also coloring the glass adjacent, visible toward the tip of this vessel.

A pesky broken ankle has slowed me down a bit the last couple months, but I've been back in the studio creating beautiful tiny tear jars! I'll be previewing them the next couple days with the collection dropping soon.
