Part 27
The Orders Looked at the Inventory
Auntie woke up feeling accomplished after making four ribbon skirts…
then opened the order list and watched that feeling leave her body 😭🤣
And cousin…
that is how I knew this chapter was not about having enough.
It was about knowing what needed to come first.
Ayeeeee.
Now listen.
After “one more skirt” became four…
after the bobbin survived corrective action…
after Bestie supervised production from beneath a blanket…
after sacred juice entered several different lifetimes…
Auntie walked into the sewing room the next morning.
Hair sideways.
Sacred juice fresh.
Body still negotiating with 2:07 a.m.
She looked at the rack.
Four new ribbon skirts.
Beautiful.
Colorful.
Ready for Table Mountain.
Auntie smiled.
Bestie walked in behind her.
“Look at you.”
Auntie nodded proudly.
“I got some inventory done.”
Bestie looked at the rack.
Then toward the order board.
Then back at Auntie.
“Do not turn around.”
Mmmmmm.
Auntie turned around.
Orders.
Several of them.
Names.
Sizes.
Deadlines.
Notes.
Customer promises waiting patiently while Auntie had been sewing like Table Mountain was arriving by lunchtime.
Auntie stared.
Bestie took one careful sip.
“The orders have requested equal representation.”
Ayeeeee 😭🤣
Auntie grabbed the clipboard.
“Okay. We organize.”
Bestie pulled up her folding chair.
“I support government.”
Auntie started counting.
Customer skirts first.
Then Table Mountain inventory.
Small.
Good.
Medium.
Good.
Large.
Auntie frowned.
Bestie leaned over.
“What happened?”
“Not enough.”
Then came extra large.
Auntie counted.
Paused.
Counted again.
Bestie looked beneath the rack.
“Maybe one fell.”
“No.”
“Check behind the fabric.”
“No.”
Bestie stared at the two lonely skirts.
“The extra larges have abandoned the Nation.”
Ayeeeee 😭🤣
Auntie pointed at her.
“Do not start.”
Bestie grabbed the clipboard.
“Inventory report.”
She cleared her throat.
“Smalls are dependable.”
“Mediums have strong work ethic.”
“Larges are going through something.”
“And extra larges have stopped returning calls.”
Auntie took the clipboard back.
Mmmmmm.
Then the little cousin from next door appeared.
“What are you doing?”
Auntie said,
“Planning.”
Bestie said,
“Intervention.”
The child looked at the racks.
“You have a lot.”
Auntie nodded.
“But not enough of the right things.”
Whew.
There it was.
Because sometimes having a lot is not the same as having what the moment actually needs.
Ayeeeee.
Auntie looked at the customer orders again.
Those came first.
People had already trusted her.
Already paid.
Already waited.
Table Mountain inventory mattered…
but a promise already made mattered more.
Mmmmmm.
Auntie drew three columns on the board.
ORDERS
TABLE MOUNTAIN
IF WE STILL HAVE ENERGY
Bestie pointed at the third column.
“That one feels realistic.”
Auntie nodded.
“Orders first.”
Then she listed what needed sewing.
One black and turquoise.
One burgundy and gold.
Two shirts still waiting on final details.
Then inventory.
Large skirts.
Extra large skirts.
A few bright statement pieces.
Bestie added:
ONE SKIRT THAT MAKES PEOPLE STOP WALKING
Auntie looked at her.
“That is not a size.”
“It is a business category.”
Ayeeeee 😭🤣
Then Auntie started making a schedule.
Morning.
Orders.
Afternoon.
Inventory.
Evening.
Stop sewing at a reasonable hour.
Bestie laughed out loud.
Auntie looked up.
“What?”
Bestie pointed at the last line.
“I enjoy fiction.”
Mmmmmm.
Auntie underlined it.
“No sewing after midnight.”
Bestie added:
THIS INCLUDES 11:59 WITH BAD INTENTIONS
Ayeeeee 😭🤣
The little cousin watched them.
“What if you do not finish everything before Table Mountain?”
Auntie paused.
Then looked at the rack.
“We bring what we have.”
Simple.
No panic.
No pretending she had twenty extra hands hidden in the closet.
Whew.
That was the teaching.
You can work hard without demanding the impossible from yourself.
You can have goals without turning every unfinished thing into evidence that you failed.
Ayeeeee.
Some promises need to come first.
Some ideas can wait.
Some inventory gets made.
Some does not.
And cousin…
you do not have to destroy yourself trying to make the rack look fuller.
Mmmmmm.
Bestie looked over the plan.
“So this is official?”
“Yes.”
“What do we call it?”
“A schedule.”
Bestie shook her head.
“No. This has deadlines, negotiations, limited resources, and at least one disagreement.”
She wrote across the top:
THE TWELVE DAY SEWING TREATY
Auntie stared.
“We do not need another treaty.”
Bestie capped the marker.
“Too late. Ratified.”
Ayeeeee 😭🤣
Auntie sat at the machine.
First customer order in front of her.
Fabric ready.
Ribbon measured.
She pressed the pedal.
Rrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Bestie smiled.
“Look at that. Priorities.”
Then Auntie’s phone buzzed.
She ignored it.
Buzz.
Ignored it again.
Bestie checked the screen.
“Cousin.”
“What?”
“Another order.”
Auntie stopped sewing.
Slowly looked toward Bestie.
Bestie looked toward the schedule.
Then added one more line.
AMENDMENT ONE.
Ayeeeee 😭🤣
Good morning, cousins.
Auntie has four beautiful new skirts.
Several customer promises.
A Table Mountain rack still asking for more.
And a Twelve Day Sewing Treaty that received its first amendment before lunch.
Because you cannot do everything at once.
Take care of the promises already made.
Build what you can.
Leave some room for your body, your joy, and reality.
And cousin…
if the extra larges decide to return to the Nation, please tell them production is waiting.
Ayeeeee 😭🤣
To be continued...
