Seems like most or many of us have been thumbing through the writings and poems of Wendell Berry today, upon news of his passing on what often feels like the last day of summer: August 31st. WB was always good for a reminder that we can do very little while we’re here: we can take care of each other, and we can take care of the earth. But if we manage a practice of those two things we actually can do so much. He taught me as much as anyone that death is the beating heart of life, and that life stretches always towards death. He seemed to deeply love rivers, rocks, women, and solitude. He steadfastly rejected imperialism, nationalism, and the technologies of war. None of these words I write do him any justice; do yourself a favor and spend the rest of your life reading his poems. 💌 ST
