Arsenal continued their pre-season preparations with an impressive 4-1 win over German champions Bayer Leverkusen at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners, playing their first home game since the final day of last season, raced into an early 2-0 lead through goals by Oleksandr Zinchenko and Leandro Trossard.

Gabriel Jesus capitalised on a loose Leverkusen throw-in to run clear and make it 3-0 before the interval.

Bukayo Saka came off the bench to create the fourth with a clever cut-back, which former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka helplessly prodded towards Germany forward Kai Havertz who reacted quickly to score.

Andy Farrell expects world champions South Africa to be "twice as good" as they were when winning last weekend's first Test but still believes his Ireland side can secure a drawn series in Durban on Saturday.

Farrell feels Ireland have room to improve considerably from their performance in the 27-20 defeat in Pretoria.

"It was a proper Test match and I get all that but when we strip it back from our side, we were disappointed in ourselves," said the Ireland coach.

"Our first-half performance, it wasn’t us, it wasn’t us doing things properly."

British runner Jessica Warner-Judd says she has been provisionally diagnosed with a form of epilepsy after suffering a seizure during the women's European 10,000m final on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old dropped out with 600m to go in Rome and while being assessed in the medical centre, said she had a further seizure which led to her being sedated and spending the night in hospital.

Mauricio Pochettino says his Chelsea side "gave up" during their damaging 5-0 defeat by Arsenal at Emirates stadium.

Having gone into half-time 1-0 down, the Blues conceded four goals during a devastating 18-minute spell in the second half as they fell to their heaviest defeat in a London derby since 1986.

Pochettino had made three changes to his defence for the game, opting to rest Trevoh Chalobah and Thiago Silva, while Malo Gusto sustained an injury during Saturday's FA Cup semi-final loss to Manchester City.

"It's not difficult to explain," said Pochettino. "Everyone saw we didn't compete from the beginning of the game.

"After we conceded the team was so soft. I'm so disappointed with the start because we're supposed to have full energy and compete better.

"We were not aggressive and we did not concentrate on situations where it is easy to find the solution. That is why I'm so disappointed."

Chelsea had gone into the match on an eight-game unbeaten run in the Premier League and an outside chance of qualifying for Europe next season.

But Tuesday's loss - their biggest of the season - leaves them ninth in the table.

"We were talking at half-time to start in a different way," added Pochettino. "But we did not. When we conceded the third goal the team gave up. It was tough on them.

"We competed really well against Manchester City, it was a fantastic game. But then we did not compete three days later. Maybe we were not fresh.

"It's not fair to talk about the players we are missing. From the start of the season we have been missing so many players every single week.

"The team showed a lack of capacity to resist - that is what is the problem."

Gareth Southgate's England have become the masters of the missed opportunity and they enter Euro 2024 knowing history will not be so kind should the same fate befall them in Germany.

England's clear progress under Southgate can be measured in major tournaments. The trick now is to actually try to win one this summer or risk being forever labelled as the nearly men.

The days of humiliation under Roy Hodgson when England could not even get out of their group at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and were then embarrassed by minnows Iceland at the Euros two years later have been replaced by regular runs to the latter stages of the big events.

England may have lost to Brazil and drawn with Belgium in their two Wembley friendlies but they were essentially fact-finding missions designed to crystallise Southgate's thoughts as he moves towards naming his 23-man squad for Germany.

Barca see off Napoli

Barcelona 3-1 Napoli (4-2 on aggregate)

Barcelona reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in four years with an entertaining victory over Napoli.

Fermin Lopez and Joao Cancelo put Barcelona on their way at Estadi de Montjuic, but the hosts were made to work hard by the Italian side who pulled one back through Amir Rrahmani.

A back-and-forth encounter was eventually settled by Poland striker Robert Lewandowski's close-range finish with seven minutes of normal time remaining.

Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi has been ruled out for up to eight weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

Guehi, 23, was injured in the Eagles' loss at Brighton on 3 February and was replaced on 28 minutes.

After the initial scan, it was thought the injury would only keep the England defender out for two or three weeks.

Guehi will also miss England's matches with Brazil and Belgium next month - their final games before manager Gareth Southgate names his Euro 2024 squad.

There was an option for Guehi not to have an operation but that may have resulted in him needing treatment further down the line.

Serie A will stick with 20 teams after 16 of its current clubs voted against reducing the division to 18 sides.

Only Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Roma voted for the proposal to cut the number of Italian top-flight sides at a shareholders' meeting in Milan.

The current format of 20 teams was introduced in 2004-05.

A proposal for reforms was also approved as the Italian league pushes for more autonomy, similar to the Premier League in England.

Those reforms will be presented at the extraordinary general assembly of the Italian football federation (FIGC) in March.

"Currently, the system does not give Serie A the autonomy and decision-making weight it should have with respect to economic weight," Serie A President Lorenzo Casini said.
