August did what August does.

It was icky. It was sticky. It made for good laughs and good stories during midnight taco and pizza runs, and good conversations over a bottle of red with friends.

I always take a deep breath when August rolls around. Like my father, I carry a strange memory of this month. August memories bring August grief. But this one wasn’t so bad. It was surprising that’s for sure.

I realized I needed a break. I decluttered my space, and somehow, clearing out all the little things helped clear my mind, too. I put a few old stories to bed and made room for new ones.

There were birthdays, books, little things I made, long walks, good friends. Cousins. Always the cousins 😘

And somewhere in the middle of all of it, I realized I was okay.

Actually, I am exactly I need to be.

Can you believe I’m actually looking forward to the fall? A first!

Happy September! 🍁

I’m tired. Aren’t we all? I keep seeing so many of us talking about it lately.

Lately, I’ve felt genuinely overwhelmed just opening this app. There’s this constant feeling that I need to keep up to keep creating, posting, producing. Not necessarily because I want to, but because I’m trying to please an algorithm that will always demand a new pound of flesh.

In short, I’m burnt out.

So I’m giving myself permission to take a break. To spend time with people I love. To make things that don’t need to be posted. To have hobbies that don’t need to become content.

Maybe I’ve outgrown this particular phase. Maybe I just need a little time away. I don’t know yet.

I’m not saying goodbye. I’ll still be here, but it might look a little different.

And if you’re feeling burnt out, too: take the break. The world will keep spinning. We’re the ones putting all this pressure on ourselves, so maybe we can give ourselves permission to take some of it off. ❤️

I have a confession to make: the only flowers I can keep alive are the ones I crochet. 🫣

I come from an entire lineage of green thumbs. My grandmother loved her roses, my mom can keep just about anything alive, and my dad was an agricultural engineer. And somehow, I ended up with a black thumb.

Every time my mom visits, she brings me a plant despite my pleas not to. They’re just too beautiful to kill… and yet, somehow, I do.

The funny thing is, I’ve always dreamed of having a garden of my own. I love being surrounded by greenery and flowers. I just seem to be much better at appreciating them than keeping them alive.

Which is probably why flowers were some of the very first things I ever crocheted. If I can’t keep them alive, I can at least make them last forever. 🌸

My designs have wandered away from florals over the years, but I still have a few of those original flower earrings available. So if you’d rather wear your flowers than try to keep them alive, head to my pinned post to enter my giveaway! 💐

An ode to unfinished projects and my hands. ✋🏼

Sometime in May, I started these gloves after becoming obsessed with mesh gloves popping up all over my feed. I decided to give them a try without a pattern because… how hard could it be? Right?? 👀

It was all going fine until I got to the fingers, my long, bony, skeletal fingers that my siblings teased me about endlessly growing up, but never failed to call upon when something was stuck in a tiny crevice.

My natural urge when a project doesn’t go my way is to tuck it away and never look at it again. But I don’t want to do that anymore, especially with these gloves that I really did enjoy making, looking at, and wearing.

So, they’re not quite done yet, but I’m reworking them and determined to finish them this time. And I want to glorify the unfinished work just as much as the finished stuff.

Sometimes unfinished doesn’t mean failure or that it’ll never happen. It just means not right now. And that’s okay, too. 💛

What’s an unfinished project you’ve been meaning to get back to?

Green Doors & Green Floors
Thoughts while walking barefoot in the garden and rereading green notes.

Lately, while decluttering my space, I’ve been finding old photographs, abandoned projects, and little notes from my past.

Green is my favorite color, and one of the trickiest colors to achieve with natural dyes. Ironic, considering how abundant it is in nature. We have endless green leaves and plants, yet sometimes you have to do a little alchemy to get that perfect green.

For me, red isn’t the color of love. It’s green.

It’s picking flowers with my Abuelita in the garden. Scraping my knees climbing trees and mountains with my cousins. The goat I fell in love with on an indigo farm. My father’s favorite green corduroy pants…

It’s the color I feel most myself in. The color I rest in.

So here’s a little collection of green things I’ve made, found, photographed, and carried along with other random bits and baubles. From my travels to my parents’ garden and right here at home. 💚

What’s your favorite color?

You say the world can see you, but I can’t.
I wink and write you a poem instead.

Back to my roots with this one.

When I first started R + T, I spent hours putting together these little shoots. I was still too shy to show my face, too shy to be seen, too shy to even talk about what I was creating. Amazing to think of how far I’ve come in these last two years.

Some people see an eye when they look at these, a talisman of protection.

Some see a star. A celestial cluster of color. Winking down on us from the heavens.

I see a strange fruit, ripening slowly into its sweetest perfection.

What do you see?

Now available in the shop. ☺️
