Who's going fishing this weekend?

08/24/2026

**We want to hear from Virginia anglers.**

In response to the Virginia DWR's recent announcement regarding increases to license fees and a 35% reduction in trout stocking opportunities, we're trying to understand what concerns you all have.

Are the license increases and trout stocking reductions your biggest concerns? Or are there other issues that you think need to be addressed? The plan is pretty lengthy with a lot of different changes when you dig into it with things like boating and camping mentioned.

We've also been hearing concerns about things like the stocking schedule, anglers obtaining stocking information ahead of time, people chasing stocking trucks, overcrowding, and how the changes could affect local businesses and everyday anglers.

We're considering launching a petition asking DWR and the Board of Wildlife Resources to reconsider some of these changes and, more importantly, provide answers and transparency about how these decisions were made.

Before we do that, we want to hear from you.

What are your biggest concerns?

What questions do you think DWR needs to answer?

What would you like to see changed?

And what ideas do you have that could be better alternatives?

I also want to be very clear about our intentions if we launch this petition **This will not be politically driven, and it will not be an attack on DWR or the people who work there.**

DWR plays an extremely important role in protecting Virginia's wildlife, fisheries and outdoor resources, and we support that mission.

But just like many of you, **we currently have more questions than answers.**

If we're going to be asked to pay more for licenses while receiving fewer trout stocking opportunities, we believe it's reasonable to ask where the money is going, how the 35% reduction was determined, what the actual financial savings will be, and whether there are better alternatives.

If enough people feel the same way, **we will move forward with a petition that is a well-researched, and request for DWR and the Board to reconsider the changes and provide the answers Virginia anglers deserve.**

So tell us what you think.

**What are we missing? What concerns you the most?** private message us if you'd like as well.

Well, that’s unfortunate. I guess it’s officially a sad day for fishermen in Virginia. 🎣

We tried. Over 1,800 comments from hardworking Virginia outdoorsmen and women, but apparently they were just sent to an inbox to be lost and unread for ever. 🤷‍♂️

We all knew the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources had their minds made up before the public comment period even opened, so I guess checking the “public input” box was all that really mattered.

So now we get to pay more in license fees for 35% less trout stocking… and the trout that do get stocked will be those lovely 6" - 7" trout. And the full stocking schedule will be announced, working parents you want to take your kids to catch some trout on the weekend? Not in Virginia for the next 10 years 100 trucks will be lined up at every stream waiting for the trout truck and wipe it out in a day.

But hey, at least we’ll have the privilege of paying more to catch fewer fish. Got it. 👍

Unfortunately, this is going to do some serious damage to trout fishing in Virginia. The people who actually fish these waters tried to tell them, but apparently 1,800+ comments weren’t enough to outweigh a decision that had already been made.

Great job, Virginia. 🎣👏

PRESS RELEASE: VIRGINIA BOARD OF WILDLIFE RESOURCES APPROVES FEE INCREASES & WILDLIFE & BOATING REGULATIONS

Richmond, VA — At its regularly scheduled August meeting, the Board of Wildlife Resources approved several wildlife, fisheries, and boating regulations. In addition, the board approved increases to certain fees related to hunting, fishing, trapping, and boating and a new fee for primitive camping on Department owned wildlife management areas.

The proposed Stocked Trout Management Plan was endorsed by the Board. The original plan proposed by DWR in May was a 10-year management plan and after the public comment period and further staff review a five-year management plan was presented by staff and endorsed by the Board. The plan includes a 35% reduction in trout stocking statewide.

These approvals came after a 30-day public comment period during which the Department received a total of 1835 comments on proposed regulations and fee increases as well as the Stocked Trout Management Plan. Out of those, 972 comments specifically related to the proposed fee increases.

Fee Increases:
Effective Oct. 1, 2026, most resident hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses, as well as boat registration and titling fees will increase by $5. Licenses for youth, apprentice, disabled veterans, and disabled participants will not increase. Boating related fees have not increased since 2019 and hunting, trapping, and fishing licenses have not increased since 2012. A $10 fee to camp on Department-owned lands will also go into effect on Oct. 1, 2026.

Wildlife:
Approved changes include updating the lists of federally threatened and endangered species and of native and naturalized fauna in Virginia, adding and removing species from the state list of endangered and threatened species, clarifying the start of bear hound training season, changing the release date for rehabilitated deer fawns via permittees, and adjustments to the elk special conservation license program. Some of these changes will become effective on Oct. 1, 2026, while others will become effective on Jan. 1, 2027.

Fisheries:
Fisheries regulatory changes include a prohibition on stocking flathead catfish and rock bass, limiting the waters in which certain gear can be used to collect bait, updating the definition of “fish bait,” as well as changes to some local trout regulations. These changes will become effective on Jan. 1, 2027.

Boating:
Boating regulations include clarifying language related to vessel operation and waterway markers, adoption of the federal requirement for children under the age of 13 to wear a life jacket when underway, and adoption of the federal requirement for the use of engine cut-off switches. These changes will become effective on Jan. 1, 2027.

This month 97 years ago, the people of Madison County, Va. celebrated a special occasion. On August 17, 1929, residents of Madison County hosted the first (and last) Hoover Day to welcome their new neighbors: President Herbert Hoover and his wife, Lou.

Earlier that year, the president and his wife chose Rapidan as the site for their new retreat. The Hoovers named their retreat Rapidan Camp, which sits between Mill Prong and Laurel Prong streams. Within the camp, the two streams join to form the Rapidan River. The camp offered everything the Hoovers wanted in an escape from the city: cooler temperatures, peace and quiet, and most importantly, trout fishing.

To celebrate the selection, Madison County locals arranged a celebration at the fairgrounds. The picnic featured squirrel stew, ham, fried chicken, barbecued beef, and pie and cake for dessert. Madison County Chamber of Commerce estimated that nearly 10,000 people enjoyed food throughout the day!

Took my little buddy River out to Lake Orange for a little while we didn't have any luck this time. I guess I'll have to put in a good word to Santa and maybe he'll bring him his own fishing pole for Christmas.
