The theme was “Costume Art” with a dress code of “Fashion is Art”… and somehow the Met Gala 2026 red carpet felt anything but.

This was supposed to celebrate the relationship between fashion and the human form ,clothing as sculpture, identity, and expression.

Instead, a lot of the Met Gala looks felt either overly safe or just… literal. Recreating art instead of embodying it. Beautiful, yes. But not provocative. Not memorable.

And then in custom by Miguel Castro Freitas.

She asked for a dress that felt like a painting, pulling from Van Gogh, Edvard Munch, and even Mugler’s iconic 1997 butterfly dress. The fabric was hand-painted by Anna Deller-Yee — and you can feel that level of artistry the second you see it.✨

This was one of the only Met Gala 2026 looks that actually understood the assignment. It didn’t just reference art, it became it. The silhouette, the structure, the way it interacted with her body — it felt intentional, slightly unsettling, and impossible to ignore.🎨
