How do we check if an alpaca is likely pregnant without a blood test or ultrasound? We bring the male and female together, and if she’s pregnant, she will spit at him, run around or both. Basically, she wants nothing to do with him 😆 It’s a quick way to check for probability. Our girl Shiraz spit at the male, so hopefully she is bred 🦙 We do a blood test and ultrasound to confirm later.

Shearing day! Alpacas get sheared once a year in the spring. They feel so much better without being full-fleeced when it starts getting warm outside, although it makes them look odd.

It takes the shearers only 5-7 minutes to shear one alpaca! The fiber is collected and sorted into categories, then sent to several places depending on what it’s being used for.

Our girls did so well at the show(s) last weekend! Blue Moscato got 2 second place ribbons, and Apple won 3 firsts and a reserve champion for quality of her fiber. We are so pleased with how they did, and are excited for the future, as we have some new cria due in the fall!

P.s. it can be really hard to get pics with alpacas. Apple (who I call spiced Apple) is not the easiest to lead, and when we took pictures, she was over all of it.
