PYOC is a revolutionary economic statement for Black America, to reclaim the wealth our ancestors built for free, redirecting our dollars into our communities, and creating a legacy of liberation, ownership, and self-sufficiency for generations to come.

Philanthropy is not liberation. Black celebrities cannot carry the weight of the community. Their efforts are usually not made with Black liberation in mind. We cannot rely on philanthropy to do the work that only we can sustain.

Financial literacy gap in Black schools is not accidental — high schools with more than 75 percent Black and Hispanic students are half as likely to offer a personal finance course as schools with fewer than 25 percent. Black financial literacy rates sit at 42 percent nationally. The schools serving Black children most are the least likely to teach them how money works. Wealthy white school districts teach personal finance as a graduation requirement. This is not a resource problem. It is a priority problem. And the priority was never Black economic independence. Community efforts are far more impactful than those of a single leader. Celebrities are not our leaders. Celebrity culture is intended solely to entertain us and even distract us. Not to liberate us. Celebrity culture gives the illusion of Black progress and success. It was never meant to bring any measure of Black excellence on the community level.

The American education system was not designed for Black student success — it was designed to produce compliant workers and it has been succeeding at that goal for over 150 years. Only 17 percent of Black fourth graders read at grade level. The school-to-prison pipeline starts in kindergarten. Black students are suspended at three times the rate of white students for the same behaviors. This is not a failure of the system. It is the system working exactly as designed. There is a major difference between wealth and income. We as Black people have to understand the difference and change the way we think about ownership.

A family-owned business is a classroom for children growing up learning to run them. Black children deserve exposure to entrepreneurship rather than being sold the lie that they must always only be employees.
