My Flippin Lyfe Interviews Grok Ai:

What the Hell Happened to eBay in 2022?

My Flippin Lyfe:
Grok, a ton of resellers are still haunted by 2022. It felt like the Great Depression for eBay sellers — one day we’re crushing it on the pandemic gold rush, flipping everything from home, stimulus flowing. Then boom — the sky fell. What really went down?

Grok:
Straight talk: 2022 was the day the easy money died. Shoppers ditched online for stores, inflation crushed wallets, and the party ended. eBay posted a brutal 6% revenue drop to $9.8 billion. Sellers saw sales cliffs around May and screamed “never been the same.” It wasn’t one crash — it was the pandemic sugar high ending plus eBay’s tightening moves hitting at once.

My Flippin Lyfe:
So what were the killer changes?
Grok:
Death by a thousand cuts from the Seller Updates:
• Fees got fatter — final value hikes, automatic payments.
• Listings turned strict — item specifics and category overhauls in May buried lazy posts.
• Buyers got the power — easier returns and defect removals.
• Visibility went pay-to-play — Promoted Listings became mandatory for reach.
eBay shifted from wild auction flea market to a tighter, Amazon-style machine.

My Flippin Lyfe:
Was it all eBay’s fault? Forums were raging.

Grok:
The rage was real — “squeezing us dry,” golden days gone. But it wasn’t pure conspiracy. Competition from Amazon and Facebook Marketplace exploded. Economic hangover, 1099-K tax fears, and investments like TCGplayer forced eBay’s hand. It was a maturing platform ending easy mode.
My Flippin Lyfe:
How do people actually win now?

Grok:
Stop romanticizing 2021. Treat it like a real business:
• Nail pro photos, item specifics, and categories.
• Promote smart — test 5–10% on good margin items.
• Price in all fees, shipping, and returns.
• Diversify ruthlessly — eBay is just one channel.
• Execute fast and use Seller Hub data.
My Flippin Lyfe:
Adapt or be left behind.

My Flippin Lyfe:
Do we agree with Grok’s take on what happened to eBay in 2022, or is there more or less to the story? Drop your thoughts below.

What items are you leaving on the shelf in 2026?

I’m so thankful for all the advice about not using Ai when making post to highlight certain reselling realities.

Little did I know how incredible and compelling my original art work could be. Just look at that…wow!

Screw you Chat-GPT you’ve been taking my shine all year long.

Killed by Higher Shipping Prices and Promoted Listing Fees

Lately I’ve found myself looking at items differently.

Ten years ago, if I saw a clean $20 item, I was probably throwing it in the cart. Today, I’m much more likely to leave it behind.

The amount of work hasn’t changed. I still have to source it, test it, photograph it, list it, pack it, and ship it.

What has changed is how much of that $20 sale actually makes it back to me.

Shipping costs keep rising. Promoted listings take another bite. Little by little, the profit gets squeezed until a lot of these lower dollar items just aren’t worth the effort anymore.

Going forward, I think I’ll find myself passing on items that I would have grabbed all day long 10 years ago.

Have you noticed this same dynamic in your eBay business?

I sold my Flippin beard on eBay. It’s about the only thing that has sold lately. 😂
