Did you hear about the and Maisie Williams scandal? The brand has been accused of greenwashing. But what does it mean ?

Today, consumers change their habits and are craving eco-friendly products, in all sorts of ways. Ecology and green consumption have become powerful selling points. Some companies have started their mutations towards sustainability, while others have just adapted their marketing by greenwashing.

Greenwashing’ is “a marketing tactic used to portray an organisation’s products, activities, or policies as environmentally friendly when they’re anything but. With people becoming increasingly aware of many industries’ impact on the planet, some companies are tempted to put a spin on their environmental sins. In a show of ‘all talk, no action’, businesses will spend more time and money on portraying themselves as caring for the planet rather than taking actionable measures to reduce their impact.”

This applies to all kinds of products: cosmetics, food, furniture, diapers, etc.
Oftentimes, we blindly trust brands by lack of time or information.

Tips to avoid Green washing :
1️⃣ Ignore the colour of the logo or the packaging (usually green) and don’t take generic words like « organic » or « natural » for granted.

2️⃣ Learn about the brand: if you feel they’re not being transparent, that might be telling. Check their website or online forums. How do they measure their impact? Do they have CSR reports? How many sustanaible products do they have? Do they recycle?

3️⃣ Spot logos and certifications: only trust those issued by independant organizations

4️⃣ Decipher labels: the brand might say « we only use recycled products or organic cotton ». You could find out that it only makes up for 10% of the actual product and 90% of is polyester. Not very sustainable.

5️⃣ Visit platforms like which have built their knowledge base

⚠️ No matter the technologies or brands you pick, maybe producing or consuming less are the best options!

How can you make sure that the brand respects your values and is not greenwashing? It takes time to go over the website, find what labels mean or ask questions to the manufacturer.
I think I got what you need! The created an app that helps you rate clothing brands based on 3 criteria.
- Labour
They look at brands’ impact on workers across the supply chain. These include policies and practices on child labour, forced labour, worker safety, freedom of association (the right to join a union), gender equality and payment of a living wage
- Environment
They consider each brand’s resource use and waste management, and their policies to address energy use and carbon emissions, impacts on water, microfibre pollution and chemical use and disposal.
- Animals :
They consider how well a brand traces it’s animal products and its animal welfare policies.
