Hey insta, it’s been a minute! (Or 7 months). The last time I posted I was about to start an audition rotation at Montefiore in NYC - I’m so honored to say that I’ll be spending the next 5 years training there in general surgery. Your girl’s going to the Bronx!!!
I wish I could’ve shared the whole application, interview, and match process but it was kind of insanely stressful 🙃 That said, I’m happy to share my experience with any med students out there about to embark on this part of their journey. Anyways, we’ve got so much to catch up on. Up next, post-match vacation! 4 cities in 3 weeks never sounded so good ✌🏼✈️

Hopping back on insta after being MIA - mandatory shades to hide the eye bags from a month of Q4 call on trauma surgery 🕶
Hands down the most fun and chaos I’ve ever experienced on a surgical rotation so far! I can’t believe how much I learned and all the great people I met. One week and one wedding later, I’m finally catching my breath…but not for long. Guess who’s headed to NYC this Friday?! 🍎

Back after what feels like the fastest 2.5 months of my life! I crammed for my Step 2 board exam in April, started my first official surgical subinternship in May, and am just now coming up for air. Haven’t been posting since adjusting to 80 work weeks really streamlines your hobbies...that and the coolest accessories I’ve been wearing these days are my and clogs (which I both highly recommend 😂). I feel like I’ve never loved anything more than the exhausting grind that is general surgery, but can’t wait to get back to sharing my fashion adventures which I’ve missed so much. Here’s to not spending every waking moment in scrubs!

This week’s workout is brought to you by my pent up rage at the state of this country. I’m glad that the consequences of anti-Asian sentiment have finally hit the media, but this didn’t happen overnight. Seeing the news has made me remember every single comment I’ve heard throughout my life - the boys in school who told me I was “hot for an Asian girl”. The men at gas stations who stared at me in my school uniform. The times I’ve been told this is a *compliment*. The guy who walked up to me by the Detroit river and said “love me long time?” I laughed out of reflex, and because it would cause less problems than shoving him in the water. The lovers who have called me “exotic”. The physician in the workroom at the hospital, with MD behind her name, talking about “chinky eyes”. The way my mother brushed it off when I texted her in tears, and said that at least it was a relatively benign comment. How many times has she heard that, I wondered, for her to be conditioned to tune it out? How sick is it that I’m glad my grandma is too old to go grocery shopping so I know she’s safe inside? The little things add up until they convince people that our lives are disposable. I’m so fu***ng tired. We have to do better. Donate at the link in my bio.

On a side note, I got my second dose of the covid vaccine this week! Definitely felt under the weather for about 24 hours (although that’s reassuring I had a strong immune response) but am pretty much back to normal now. I encourage everyone to read up and make an informed choice to know why this vaccine is so cool and so important!
