📚✨ International Literacy Day ✨📚
Today is International Literacy Day—a wonderful reminder that reading isn’t just a pastime. Literacy opens doors, builds confidence, sparks imagination, creates opportunities, and gives people the tools to navigate the world around them. 💛
And supporting literacy doesn’t have to be complicated. There are so many small ways we can help make books and reading more accessible in our own communities:
📖 Read a book today. Let children see that reading is something we do for joy, curiosity, and discovery—not just for school.
🏛️ Take your kids to the library. Let them choose their own books, explore the shelves, attend a story time, or simply spend an afternoon surrounded by stories.
🛍️ Visit a local bookstore or book vendor. Buying even one book supports the people and organizations working to keep books in our communities.
🎁 Give a child a book. A new book can become a favorite story, a treasured keepsake, or the beginning of a lifelong love of reading.
🏫 Donate books to local schools, teachers, classrooms, or youth organizations. Ask what they need before donating so your contribution can make the biggest impact.
💰 Support a literacy program. Donations can help provide books, tutoring, reading programs, and educational resources to children and adults who need them.
📚 Host a book drive. Gather gently used children's books and donate them to a local school, youth organization, literacy program, shelter, or community group.
🏠 Start a Little Free Library—or keep an existing one stocked. Make books available right in your neighborhood for anyone who wants to read.
🤝 Volunteer. Offer your time to a literacy organization, reading program, school, library, or tutoring program.
👵👧 Read together across generations. Read to a child, listen to a child read, share a favorite childhood book with someone, or help an adult who is working to strengthen their reading skills.
📱 Share the love of reading. Recommend a book, share a library resource, or tell someone about a literacy program they can support.
While you think about how you'd like to celebrate today, most importantly: make reading joyful. ❤️
And don't let the magic stop today. Instead, use today as a reminder, and celebrate books and literacy year round.
Let children choose books because the cover makes them laugh. Let them read the same favorite story 47 times. Let them read comics, graphic novels, mysteries, cookbooks, fantasy, poetry, magazines, and anything else that makes them want to turn the page.
Because sometimes the most important thing we can give someone isn't simply a book—it's the opportunity to discover that books belong to them. 📚🦋
