For so many Pennsylvanians, a trip to Hills wasn’t just shopping, it was an event. Founded in 1957 and rooted in the Mid-Atlantic, Hills became a staple across Pennsylvania through the 70s, 80s, and 90s. You’d walk in for school clothes, fishing gear, or a cassette tape, and somehow end up at the snack bar with a popcorn party pack and an ICEE.

The bright red logo, the no-frills aisles, the seasonal toy sections before Christmas, it was affordable, simple, and ours. When the stores closed in the late 90s, it felt like more than a business shutting down. It felt like a piece of growing up in Pennsylvania quietly fading away.

Just grabbed a small ice cream cone at Dairy Queen... FOUR DOLLARS?! 😱 $4 for a little swirl?! Made me think... what did that same cone cost back in the good ol' days?
In the 1980s? Probably under a buck! 1970s? Maybe 25-50 cents? 1990s? Still way cheaper than today!

People today will never understand how special Hills really was. It wasn’t just a store, it was an entire childhood wrapped in red signage and warm lights. Hills had everything: layaway for families stretching every dollar, a toy section that felt endless, and a snack bar that somehow made hot dogs, pizza, pretzels, and that free kids’ popcorn taste like magic. The smell of it hit you before you even cleared the doors.

Hills wasn’t just part of shopping culture, it defined it across Pennsylvania and the whole rust belt. Parents did their Christmas layaway there, kids circled the toy catalog until the pages wore out, and families treated a simple Friday night at Hills like an event.

Founded in 1957, it grew into a true regional icon before the retail giants pushed it out in the late 90s. And when Hills closed, it didn’t feel like losing a store, it felt like losing a piece of childhood. People don’t talk about Hills. They remember Hills.
And all of us who lived through it still miss it more than we can explain.
