When I was a child growing up in inner city Chicago it was a tradition to “bang pots and pans” at midnight to ring in the New Year. I often wonder if this was a cultural thing due to the ethnicity of our neighborhood or if it was an inexpensive substitute for fireworks (which were not legal in the city).
